  5. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? I watched 'Twas the Night (recorded earlier this week).
  6. Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Not so obviously I have, too! I just thought Edmund Blackadder deserves more than one Christmas special. Dr. Strangebrew or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Beer The Last Picture Show of Dorian Gray The Canterville Ghost in the Shell Gone with the Wind in the Willows The Maltese Falcon and the Snowman Six Days Seven Knights (Somebody more familiar with the source material help me out with a subtitle/description, eh?) Harvey Birdman of Alcatraz An invisible six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit named Harvey studies birds while imprisoned on Alkatraz Island. My Fair Lady of Burlesque Henry Higgins attempts to tutor flowergirl Eliza Doolittle in the art of striptease. Meanwhile, the mysterious death of several ecdysiasts threatens to shut down the theater.
  7. Re: Firearms in fantasy? One aspect of early firearms that this discussion has overlooked is the shock value of a weapon that spews forth fire and smoke with a loud, thunder-like report, and kills at a(n admittedly small) distance. Perhaps the GM should require a PRE roll every (or perhaps just the first) time the weapon is fired? One should also be mindful of the fact that when using firearms in an enclosed space (or with great accoustics) the roar of the discharge will probably deafenb anyone in the room, or at least those nearby. Likewise, discharging a blackpowder weapon indoors has effects worth considering. While I enjoy the smell of spent gunpowder, that only applies when it's been diluted considerably by the surrounding air. In an enclosed space, the concentration of fumes from repeated discharges would be akin to tear gas.
  8. Re: Supervillains Who Know Their Limitations Actually, what I intended was to start a thread where we introduced candidates for "mostly lame" villains. Examples: The Head Cheese: This villain wants to control the dairy industry in Wisconsin. Many of his plots involve "cheese bombs" that have various effects, depending upon the source cheese (IE: Limburger smells bad; mozerella forms an entangle, etc.) The Automobilist: Steals valuable/prototype cars, immobilizes all the cars in the city to extort money, etc. Seems to favor cities with automobile factories.
  9. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Clash of the Dinosaurs and Elfand America's Funniest Home Videos (the 2008 Christmas show). I can't begin to describe the strange dreams my subconscious concocted from those ingredients.
  10. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. There's a local AM/PM with the following sign outside: I laugh every time I see it.
  11. Re: The Art and Science of St. Nicholas According to Billy and Mandy Save Christmas, Santa isn't always a vampire. Mrs. Claus? Don't ask!
  12. Inspired by Dr. Doofenschmirtz (...And then I will rule the entire Tri-State Area!) from Phineas & Ferb, I've started this thread to solicit ideas for villains who don't want to dominate the world, but their own small territory. Ack! 2-minute warning. I gotta go reserve another computer.
  13. Re: Genre-crossover nightmares The Santa Claws Wolverine kills Santa and has to take his place. You really don't want to be on the naughty list. A Brady Bunch Christmas Carol Carol Brady tries to gather the clan together for Christmas and drives everyone crazy. She's visited by the ghosts of Christmas reruns who shows her the true meaning of Christmas -- whatever it is this year. It's a Wonderful Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean A Charlie Brown Nightmare Before Christmas Jack Skellington joines forces with the Great Pumpkin to take over Christmas. It's a Blackadder's Wonderful Life? Edmund Blackadder tries to save a failing Savings and Loan when Uncle Baldric uses the money for deposit to buy the world's largest turnip. Heaven's bureaucracy can only spare George the perpetually-second-class angel (played by Hugh Laurie). Hilarity ensues. Don't expect Christmas to be saved this time.
  14. Re: Firearms in fantasy? I used to shoot cap-and-ball firearms, and most of the above advice is good. I would like to point out that the pan on a matchlock gun is covered by a sliding lid. You slide the lid open just before you fire (where you previously put your priming charge). As long as you didn't open the pan while just walking around (a good way to spill your priming charge, BTW) you were perfectly safe carrying your matchlock with a lighted matchcord in the serpentine. Wikipedia entry for Matchlock.

  16. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Watched Star Trek (the recent theatrical release). I like the way they used time travel to reboot the franchise. Now maybe those Old School Trekkies will shut up and let the rest of us enjoy the show.

  20. Re: Steampunk - Source Material Somehow this thread reminded me of:
  21. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? I watched The Cat from Outer Space (Disney) last night. It's amazing how, as a young man, I never noticed just how insipid Disney fare was during that era. It wasn't until much later that Disney finally overcame it's lack of Walt.
  22. Re: Hero System Good Idea/Bad Idea... Good Idea: Call of Cthulu Hero Bad Idea: Call of Nature Hero
  23. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? I got my first dose of Scrooge for the year earlier this week. It was the George C. Scott version. I also saw a History Channel show on Guns of the Orient (anything east of Constantinople but including Morrocco). Interesting firearms. I also saw a program that delved into the scientific basis upon which dragons may have evolved. I can't recall whether it was on History Channel or the Science channel, but it was one of those with a 2009 production date.
  24. Re: The Art and Science of St. Nicholas That would explain the incredible cargo capacity of the sleigh (amongst other things) but you still have to stat him out.
  25. Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine Yeah, but after a few "applications" of said "element", who cares?
