  1. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? The Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday The 1970s was full of westerns my parents wouldn't let me go to (and there were no conveniently local movie theaters to sneak out to. Apparently this one has naked chicks and boobs in it despite the PG rating, and an actually entertaining plot. Keep in mind that it's a product of its time and you not only get a serviceable comedy-western, but clues to mid-70s American culture as well.

  4. Re: The cranky thread Yeah, but putting that information inside somebody else's skull (or getting them to use a dictionary) can be nearly impossible. The following phrase (or a paraphrase of this one): "You know what I meant, so it's not important how I spelled it." can be translated as "I don't understand how anyone could possibly misunderstand my meaning". I smile inside when one of "them" gets mad because someone couldn't parse their garbled attempt at communication. ETA: Unless I'm the one who couldn't interpret their thoughtless blather (and sometimes even then).
  5. Re: The cranky thread My apoplectic fit begins when someone writes "dies" as the singular OR plural form of "dice". Spellcheck has done evil things to English, and it's not done yet.
  6. Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore Interesting story (and repped for being an interesting read), but I can't see the connection with "Foods for those that just don't care anymore". Not so very long ago, most people butchered their own meat. Livestock was the only means of keeping meat fresh when the only refrigeration you had was snow in winter (not very reliable unless you get "real" winters). This site has a lot of interesting examples. The entry for collard greens (a food from my own childhood) is spot-on, except I could never bring myself to actually eat the source of that "aroma".
  7. Re: A Thread for Random Videos This one made my eyes sweat.
  8. Re: A Thread for Random Videos We're not as dumb as you might think, but the village idiots get more press precisely because they're more interesting than smart people who have reasonable beliefs. If all I had to go on was newspaper, news and blogs, it would be a wonder if I wasn't worried about everything. I can't promise won't go crazy, but a lot of us are working to keep us sane. Wish us luck, huh?

  18. Re: A Thread for Random Videos I have a nephew with autism (in his case, high-functioning Asperger's syndrome). It astounds me how many parents, without knowing a child's circumstances, will dispense "advice" and disapproval despite their almost complete ignorance on autism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDMMwG7RrFQ
