  1. One note timeless Came out of nowhere It wailed like the wind and night It sought no glory It added no meaning Not even a reason why No thought No need to say something No message to sell It played without a buzz or a showing Out of the great nothing It came without fail One man with his mind full Trying to get somewhere He thought, "Man this thing could fly!" He had good intentions, even some feeling He thought, "Lord, I've got to try ..." No thought He had to say something His message would sell He got a buzz without knowing Into the great nothing The boy slipped and fell Come up breathing Up from the water Man, he was so submerged Where's the feeling? It must be way under Far from the spoken word No, no - no corporate ladder No hometown parade The fat cats just keep getting fatter What does it matter The thing must be played... One note timeless... Don't let the buzz get you down Don't lose your memory or you'll sink fast and drown But you can't seem to sleep for the thoughts in your mind Since you can't stand to think you have one hell of a time Hanging with submergers you drink yourself blind You think it's fine You've got time... The boy has got potential But he's never had commercial success There's flies in his ointment There's Stuyvesants and liquor on his breath We'll have him charge the gate We'll have to set him straight We'll have him seal his future fate Before it's too late I worked with him closely It must have been ten years ago Of all the pains in the asses He's the worst I've had the bad taste to know He's undirectable Completely uncoachable But perhaps we can put him In an altered state Before it's too late See the writing on the wall Once the man who had it all You threw it all away, look around and nothing's left You've got nothing to forget No golden yesterday 'Cause you missed your calling You could have lived up in the sky You missed your calling every time Watch the lady throw the rune Have her come up to your room She comes from Montreal There's no limelight only lime And Tequila's made you blind It's time to lose it all 'Cause you missed your calling You could have lived up in the sky You missed your calling one more time The boy has got potential But he'll never have commercial success We gave him good direction But he always thought that he knew what's best We tried to set him straight His calls will have to wait We tried to change his future fate But now it's too late Something keeps telling quiet now, quiet now - quiet now Mother says quiet down, quiet down - quiet down... One note timeless Came out of nowhere Just when all hope was gone And nothing matters But that it's breathing It ends as it has begun No thought No need to say something No message to run From the ashes Out of the great nothing Without a buzz or a showing Out of the great nothing With nobody knowing It plays on and on ...
  2. I disagree. That's not a cheap shot. That's awesome.
  3. Olympus Mons. I'm not ready for Valhalla yet. M-31 (Andromeda galaxy) vs. M-80 (small explosive)
  4. Last weekend's "Week 0" games notwithstanding, the college football season starts in earnest tonight. Tonight's Thermodynamics/Kinetics class has been cancelled because my school is hosting North Dakota (the team no longer humorously known as "The Boys Named Sioux"). BYU is a 15.5 point underdog to LSU in their relocated game on Saturday night. Based on what I saw last week, they have no chance to cover, let alone win. BYU then gets Utah and Wisconsin the next two weeks, albeit both at home. They'll be lucky to win one of those three games. Colorado is favored by 4 over Colorado State in Denver tomorrow night. After watching the Rams take apart Oregon State last week, I think this year they beat the Buffaloes. I think this season will also show CSU to be a solid team, and CU's impressive 2016 season to be a fluke. Any other bold predictions, folks?
  5. Like the man said, "Always bet on black". Sea Slight 2½ Caspian Sea vs. Sea of Tranquility
  6. You say you will, but you never do Kind of gettin' tired of lookin' through you Got a lot on your mind, but not as much as I had on mine When you got everything You don't know what it's like to lose But everything is nothing when your neck's inside the noose When it chokes you out and it fades to black Leaves you wishing you could take it all back It don't matter if it's wrong or right, it don't matter if you sleep at night It don't matter how much you pray,'cause you'll get yours come Judgement Day 'cause Everything comes back around No matter how much you cover your ground You spend your whole life running from your sins Runnin' a race you ain't never gonna win Gonna catch up to you in the end Got holes in your story, got a monkey on your back One foot in the grave and you're caught in a trap With a fallin' down curtain that you can't stop An iron in the fire that you didn't mean to drop When you live in a house that's made of glass Don't throw stones cause your walls will fall fast As those walls come crashing down Look at the pieces scattered all around Pick up the ones that you can find Try to put them all together but you're runnin' out of time 'cause Everything comes back around No matter how much you cover your ground You spend your whole life running from your sins Runnin' a race you ain't never gonna win Gonna catch up to you in the end Broke down and you're all alone A blade of guilt cuts you to the bone Think by now you'd have turn and run But you can't cross a bridge you've burned 'cause Everything comes back around No matter how much you cover your ground You spend your whole life running from your sins Runnin' a race you ain't never gonna win Gonna catch up to you in the end You know that you can't run forever my friend
  7. Dr. Strange is Benedict Cumberbatch. Dr. Doom is that guy who played the bad guy on Charmed. Dr. Strange wins, hands down. Is There a Doctor In the House? Dr. Beverly Crusher (ST:TNG) vs. Dr. Janet Fraiser (SG-1)
  8. Q: Why does an acorn do such crazy things?
  9. CR'67 was extremely entertaining (and who doesn't love David Niven?), but CR'06 has arguably the best Bond song since "View To A Kill", or maybe even "Live and Let Die". Bond Comparisons 3: Chemical Bonds vs. Municipal Bonds
  10. As much as I enjoyed Goldeneye, The Man With the Golden Gun is a classic. More Fun with Precious Metals: Booster Gold vs. Silver Samurai
  11. Well, I wish I was a vampire so I could stay out all night long I wish I was Bob Dylan so I could write a bunch of hit songs And if I was a rolling stone, I'd roll right out of town But I wish I was a square so I'd stop coming back around And I don't know why I forgive the things you do to me I don't know why I don't have the guts to set you free But if I had one last wish, I know what that would be Well I'd wish I weren't your prisoner and that I could be released And if I had a fast car, girl, I'd drive so far away As far from you as far enough, and that's just where I'd stay And if I was a searcher, then I'd find a brighter day And I know you'd be all right, 'cause you don't love me anyway And I don't know why I forgive the things you do to me I don't know why I don't have the guts to set you free But if I had one last wish, I know what that would be Well I'd wish I weren't your prisoner and that I could be released Yeah, I'd wish I weren't your prisoner and that I could be released
  12. "Infraviolet" sounds like it could be the name of a prog band, so I'll go with that. Prog Rock Classics Showdown: In the Court of the Crimson King (King Crimson) vs. Brain Salad Surgery (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
  13. If they still make it, there's a soda shop in downtown Salt Lake City that almost certainly has it.
  14. I'm going to choose IR, because I have more experience with infrared spectroscopy than ultraviolet spectroscopy. Light versus Sound
  15. It's like aspic, but usually fruit flavored. And without larks' tongues.
  16. Would you allow me to look at your syllabus for this class? I'm putting together an astronomy course for my school (which hasn't had one since the Bush administration...maybe the first Bush administration) and I'm looking for ideas.
  17. Science without math is like tennis without a racket. (Also, finding a good metaphor is like trying to balance Jell-O on a pencil.)
