For one thing, there was a different actor playing the husband, and he and Nia Vardalos had no chemistry. More importantly, however, the producers (esp. Vardalos) never quite figured out that the 'fish out of water' jokes that worked so well in the movie were unsustainable over the course of a television series. My Big Fat Greek Wedding was funny partly because of the discomfort level. My Big Fat Greek Life was uncomfortable without being funny.
