  7. Re: The Chicxulub impact At a guess? Miscalculation. Too much damage to the ecosphere; the resultant environment was too harsh for the species they wished to introduce. So, they went away, intending to come back once things had stabilized, but their civilization didn't last that long. Of course, the first xenoarchaeologist to correctly translate their starmaps is going to have a real uphill battle getting anyone to believe it...

Re: Long Distance Communication AN idea I've been toying with is to have most areas serviced only by spacecraft, but have a "Direct - Feed" network at the hearts of major empires, basically wormholes that are kept permanently open (at massive cost in power and wealth). The difference between "Core Worlds" and "Frontier" (or "Exploited") is more or less whether you can afford to run a Direct-Feed station.

    Re: Haunted Stars There's also the point of: Why go there? High danger zones are shunned unless there's a good reason to venture into them. If the area is irrational, irrational things can happen - but irrational things can also exist. Materials that defy established rules - and can continue to do so even if shipped back into the "rational" areas, even if they cannot form there. Universal solvents, gravity-resistant metals, anagathics - all of these would be well worth the risk.
