  1. Re: The cranky thread The prevalence of allergies is skyrocketing and doctors are scrambling to figure out why. One theory held that a child's immune system is overactive for its first year or so of life, getting a feel for what it should and should not go off on. I literally rubbed dirt on my kids' hands and pacifiers for this reason when they were smaller (don't tell my wife). Another theory is that routine exposure to fine particulate matter makes a child's immune system hypersensitive; we were living a block downwind of the freeway, so that could explain it as well. But right now the real answer is no one knows what really causes allergic reactions, or how to get rid of them, short of antigen therapy shots. So... we ban the peanut butter. I agree that outright banning is probably an overreaction, but I can't think of any other way to guarantee no peanut exposure in a school full of half-feral kids. My boy's preschool goes further, banning all nuts and even juice bags (though the latter for an entirely different reason).
  2. Re: The cranky thread That'd be awesome except I don't want the kid to start thinking he can eat real peanut butter. He's three. He's bright for his age but why take the chance? It sucks that he can't eat the stuff but OTOH he doesn't know what he's missing either.
  3. Re: The cranky thread I don't know about severity--we didn't take my kid to the ER after the first peanut butter sandwich, though we probably should have--but we live in a lawsuit-happy society, so I can't blame the schools. As it is, half a PBJ will at least turns my kid into one giant vomiting itchy hive for a day, and that's after we force-fed him some benadryl.
  4. Re: The cranky thread Squats always gave me a hard time. But in my knees, not my back. Heavy squats always made it feel like my kneecaps were going to pop out at high velocity, and there's no point to doing light squats. I don't get that on the leg press machine, for some reason.
  5. Re: Musings on Random Musings There's a couple of apps that let you do it. FileMagnet and a couple more.
  6. Re: Musings on Random Musings Sounds good, though unnecessary. A good steak needs little more than salt and pepper, and I'm not so sure about the salt.

  9. Re: Musings on Random Musings How about green tea?
  10. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Today, of course, was an anniversary of sorts, observed nationwide with all sorts of solemn remembrance ceremonies. History Channel was replaying all the video that they had. I watched it briefly, then turned off the TV. My son is three years old, so obviously he has no memory or understanding of the event. Tonight, for no apparent reason, he ignored his toy cars, got out his Duplo, and started stacking square blocks to make a tower. He's done this before, but this time he didn't stop after making a short tower; he kept going as long as he had pieces. By the end he had to climb up on the bed in order to put pieces on top. When he'd put the last piece on--the tower was almost five feet tall--he held up his arms and shouted "Reach the sky!" You go, kid.
  11. Re: The cranky thread I can't outcranky that. It's just not fair.
  12. Re: Musings on Random Musings Irish setters are just fine. It's the Scottish setters you have to watch out for.
  13. Re: Musings on Random Musings Hey, no dry humping!
  14. Re: The cranky thread Is it that they weren't raised right, or does exposure to SF eventually turn people that way? Does SF create such people, or just attract them?

  16. Re: A Thread for Random Musings I married a woman who watches "Dr. 90210".

  18. Re: A Game Of Questions Are you defending him now? What is the matter with kids nowadays?
  19. Re: A Game Of Questions Why would it be? Are you just trying to avoid answering?
  20. Re: The cranky thread Well, it's official: the three-year-old is allergic to peanuts. I get to be one of the parents who carries an epi-pen wherever he goes.
  21. Re: Musings on Random Musings Oh yes, nothing is better than an intimate whipping.
  22. Re: Musings on Random Musings Is that sort of like a mental Freudian slip?
  23. Re: Musings on Random Musings Which is what, a government where merry-go-round music is in charge? Probably an improvement over most.
