The astronomers I was working with back when HST was in development spent a lot of time wailing and gnashing their teeth because it was going to be launched on the shuttle, which meant it'd be in LEO. Exposure times would be shorter, there would be thermal, gravitational, and reflectivity interference issues with Earth, orbital decay, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria, etc. In my experience the only thing astronomers hated more than the shuttle was the ISS.

Re: The cranky thread Chronology has nothing to do with how we handle retail holidays in the United States. For example, the local K-Mart has its full artificial Christmas tree section stocked and ready to go, with a full aisle of example trees powered up and lit.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings Death Magnetic is, in my opinion, the best of their albums since Justice. It is probably closest to that album in terms of overall composition--very long songs, riff after riff after riff. It's a little less thrash than Justice was, but not by much, it has more midrange, and a bit of the atmosphere from the later albums creeps in. But best of all it has no really weak tracks. The album that consists entirely of good songs is extremely rare; even these guys hadn't pulled it off for twenty years.
