Re: Giant robots! Another meme too cool for its own good. I can think of environments in which giant mecha would be superior to UAVs and other armed vehicles. Unfortunately, they're pretty unusual--high gravity, low atmosphere, extremely rough terrain. The terrain would have to be rough enough to basically require climbing and jumping, and the gravity/atmosphere combination has to be difficult enough to prevent effective UAV usage. Otherwise you're better off just building a tank like everyone else.

Re: Musings on Random Musings Supposedly Alexander the Great instituted shaving amongst his men to prevent their beards from being grabbed in combat, but I imagine it really had more to do with aesthetics than anything else. Shaving is easier than trimming if you don't have electricity. Don't use the American Civil War as any kind of evidence for or against the practice. For some reason that war encouraged some of the most outlandish facial hair arrangements ever seen in any military. Ambrose Burnside was only one example.
