  1. Re: Musings on Random Musings Because he'd have nothing left to fear here?
  2. Re: Mystical tests of character? Isn't that what happened? Of course, the other point of the film was that the original purpose of the exercise was to train Starfleet officers to be able to function in losing and/or apparently hopeless situations, and that Kirk, though commended for original thinking, wound up with a hole in his training as a result. Actually that film had depth to it that's almost unthinkable for Hollywood. Themes of aging, legacy, of facing death, sacrifice and new beginnings...
  3. Re: Mystical tests of character? It occurs to me that Arthurian legend is full of tests of character. Do you save your brother or a maiden? Violate your vow of chastity to prevent a woman from committing suicide? African or European? Etc.
  4. Re: The cranky thread Ah, retail jobs. The wife just started one of those. Just in time for the holiday insanity.
  5. Re: The cranky thread Come over, we're having a tsunami!
  6. Re: More space news! Would we want there to be? 36 days to reach 0.1c is pretty good. What are we doing for deceleration at the far end? Solar sail?
  7. Re: Mystical tests of character? Neither, of course. Air isn't the only consideration. So is food...
  8. Re: More space news! How does the graphite oil resist ablation that nickel-iron cannot? I am intrigued.
  9. Re: "Neat" Pictures But which is the hour... um... foot?
  10. Re: More space news! I wonder if it would be possible to cut the plate out of an iron asteroid.
  11. Re: Mystical tests of character? Not exactly fantasy, but:
  12. Re: More space news! I don't even think it's atmospheric detonations. Even putting some plutonium in a thermal reactor for a probe generates some vocal protest. You could use chemical rockets to put your Orion in orbit but you'd have the same hippie issue plus I imagine it would violate some treaties about putting nuclear weapons in orbit.
  13. Re: "Neat" Pictures Pedant: That's an M134 Minigun, hence the handgrips. Which is hardly less awesome. Indeed, it would be my trafffic clearing system of choice. GAU-8:
  14. Re: "Neat" Pictures Can a xenomorph be forcechoked or mind controlled?
  15. Re: "Neat" Pictures Does the lightsaber cauterize the wounds it inflicts or would the acid still be an issue?
  16. Re: More space news! Technologically, or politically?
  17. Re: "Neat" Pictures Pretty high, his depth of field is not very.
  18. Re: The cranky thread Armor wouldn't be necessary if Stripes' nails were clipped. Wait...
  19. Re: The cranky thread It could probably rip them to .mp3 or .m4a format, too.
  20. Re: The cranky thread People still use CD players?
