  1. Re: I have a dream. (and MAN was it wierd!) There is so much awesome campaign material in this thread.
  2. Re: The cranky thread Much too subtle, I'd go for the force lightning. Painfuller too.
  3. Re: More space news! Curiosity team is hinting they have some interesting results pending confirmation.
  4. Re: Future Guns: Projectile Obsolete? The other factor here is improving defenses. Body armor tech has reached a point where rifle rounds can fairly reliably be stopped by a plate. That's what's driven the development of rounds like the FN 5.7mm or the HK 4.6mm, both of which are very narrow, high velocity bullets to maximize armor penetration. I've seen some literature that predicts that, as armor becomes more and more widespread, the rifle may give way to grenade and rocket launchers as the 'standard' infantry weapon. I know the Chechens have been organizing squads around the RPG gunners, as opposed to attaching RPG gunners to rifle squads.
  5. Re: Musings on Random Musings Wool you fleece not start up another series of puns?

  7. Re: The cranky thread Tell us again! Also (spoilered for the s word),
  8. Re: The cranky thread Looks like we'll be having our biweekly business model change tomorrow. And they wonder why we don't seem to be getting anywhere.
  9. Re: Musings on Random Musings I guess you would know, I haven't seen you post for what seems like years.
  10. Re: "Neat" Pictures Let me know when he starts carving software manuals out of human skulls. I know some skulls I'd like to donate.
  11. Re: The cranky thread My life sucks so badly I'm just going to post some highlights here. - The way people keep filling up my calendar with meetings there is no way I'll have the demo ready for next week's tradeshow. - Let alone tomorrow afternoon when the CEO wants to see it. - Fights with the wife: Let kid fall asleep in front of the TV, left popcorn in the trunk of the car, had to ask how to microwave a chimichanga, forgot to empty a wastebasket. - Wheel fell off the car. No one got hurt. Many jokes about the wheels literally falling off in my life. - $440 to fix the wheel. Shouldn't complain since that was way lower than I thought it could get. Still awaiting the bill for associated bodywork. - Missed a typo in the latest Shadowfist expansion. I'm only one of many on the playtest list but I feel bad I didn't go over the last PDF. - Yard is trashed. - House is trashed. - Wife keeps buying stuff that we have no room for. Seriously the clutter pisses me off more than the bills.
  12. Re: What Non-Fiction Book have you just finished? The Wave: In the Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks and Giants of the Ocean by Susan Casey. I had no idea this book was about surfing when I picked it up at the library--I thought it was primarily about storms and rogue waves. It does cover those but about half the book is about big wave surfing, especially the exploits of Laird Hamilton and his crew, with whom I was already somewhat familiar. Anyway the book is very well researched and written. It's very hard to describe waves, and surfing, with text, but Casey does a pretty good job. Recommended.
  13. Re: Future Guns: Projectile Obsolete? I remember those! Yeah, the MLA Rifle was almost a no-brainer compared to most of the other weapons.
  14. Re: The cranky thread Meh. It's just one toe, I'm sure he has lots more.
  15. Re: Future Guns: Projectile Obsolete? IRL projectile weapons aren't going anywhere. There are promising developments in directed energy weapons, especially solid state lasers, but projectiles continue to improve. Indeed, there have been equally promising developments with railgun tech.
  16. Re: The cranky thread Emotional support. I left my lights on at work the other day. I have to drive through a tunnel to get to and from work, and I haven't been able to open my driver's side door for a couple of weeks. When I got out on the passenger side, the your-lights-are-on-idiot dinger didn't ding.
  17. Re: The cranky thread What'd he do this time?
  18. Re: "Neat" Pictures My precioussss...
  19. Re: "Neat" Pictures "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."
  20. Re: Musings on Random Musings SteveZilla is far too articulate, intelligent, and reasonable to be Romney. Or any other politician for that matter.
  21. Re: Musings on Random Musings Obviously it does, but I was thinking more along cosplay lines. A white liar in a suit would not look like Obama to me, and your description of your costume didn't mention blackface.
  22. Re: Musings on Random Musings I didn't know you were black.
  23. Re: Ring of Fire - Fantasy Hero style Easy to run, and I've played several such campaigns myself. You do have to watch out for players' overestimation of their own knowledge, though. It's one thing to know that gunpowder is made of sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. It's quite another to locate them, prepare them, and mix it together without blowing yourself up. What's really fun is dropping soft modern American civilians into a fantasy campaign. Realistically, we'd be hard pressed to bring down a FH kobold.
  24. Re: Musings on Random Musings Tonight I will be costumed as a tired and frazzled parent. Frantically finished up older boy's catfish costume this morning before school. Thank Crom for hot glue.
