I'm reminded of Snow Crash, where private LGs (or at least security) were the standard. Ng Security, Uncle Enzo, Mr. Lee's Greater Hong Kong, and others like them act as 'police' in the burbclaves.
There's also the mechanism posted in Gaiman's American Gods, where over time the old gods (e.g. Odin, Easter) are slowly phased out and replaced with new ones (Celebrity, Technology) as society evolves.
Watched Band of Brothers on Amazon. Great show. Ended slowly, but then, so did the war.
Was watching The Last Kingdom on BBC for a bit. Surprisingly good and helped tide me over until Vikings and GoT crank up again in February and April, respectively.

AIUI the teacher was working out of a workbook that was part of the approved curriculum, and the students were doing that exercise for every major religion. It only blew up when they got to Islam, of course.
