Quote In addition to the president and the first lady, former top Trump aide Kellyanne Conway, Republican Sens. Thom Tillis, of North Carolina and Mike Lee, of Utah, University of Notre Dame President John Jenkins and a White House journalist have all tested positive since attending the Rose Garden ceremony. All it takes is 1. Who knows, MAYBE this will drive things home.

unclevlad
The crunch is becoming acute. You've probably heard of the very large-scale layoffs at Disney, and the airlines. Britain's largest movie theater chain is going to close all of its theaters...128 in the UK and Ireland. Their last lifeline was the new Bond, which was pushed back. That in itself suggests they were hanging on by their fingernails anyway.

More info on them: https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/3/21279098/amc-theaters-pandemic-revenue-sec-filing-coronavirus-movie-release-delays I think the big killer is the streaming services. If the megamovies get shifted out of theaters and onto streaming services, the theaters will feel a big pinch...I suspect that's where they make a LOT of their sales and money. I also think the 'flagship' offerings on the streaming services...Star Trek, The Mandalorian, etc....are probably reducing sales. Man....what a mess this is going to be... I talked to the manager of the theater at our casino before this crud started, and at that time, he noted that they were pretty much at the mercy of what Disney wanted. His biggest fear was that Disney would start to premiere movies on demand or to Disney+ instead of theaters. That, of course, has already begun to happen. archer
As far as I can tell, before COVID hit, the theater chain I use had one employee during the day at least most of the time. He sells tickets from behind the concession counter. For snacks, he hands people a popcorn bucket which they fill themselves and a soft drink cup which they fill themselves though he has to work harder to serve hot dogs or nachos. There's no one stopping people from walking in off the streets and straight down the hall to a theater if they were brazen enough to try. I think the films are digital so they could probably be started with a timer. I wouldn't like to see it close. But it doesn't employee nearly the number of people that similar theaters did ten years ago.

Matt the Bruins
It's the one guaranteed growth industry. I went grocery shopping this morning and was stymied by an elderly man hacking and coughing all over the snacks aisle. Did a circuit to pick up a few other things, checked back and he was still there, ditto a few minutes later. He only left his post guarding the Tostitos after I gave up and got in line at the checkout counter, naturally shambling after me to take the next place in line. He was wearing a mask so it was probably smoker's lung or general old person respiratory difficulties, but still set my nerves on edge. I'm concerned that we'll easily get into a worse situation by using draconian, ineffective lockdown methods (like Hawaii is currently using) while we simultaneously fail to stop the spread of the illness and drive most of the population into abject poverty because they aren't allowed to work. I still have friends in Hawaii and it is BAD right now. But at least you can eat a $5,000 fine and up to a year in prison for jogging in the park or swimming alone at the beach. Good luck paying that off while you're not allowed to work.

Good luck paying that off while you're not allowed to work. Hawai’i reopened to stage 1 two weeks ago, and parks and restaurants have been open to groups of up to five people ever since. Should check in with your friends there more often. Hawaii’s real problem is a lack of ICU beds and associated staff. Although per capita covid rates are far lower than most states, it wouldn’t take much of an increase to overwhelm the system. Hence the “draconian” measures.
