Zakharov
Hello! I have a player that is making a martial artist character and had questions about the flavor of the legsweep maneuver vs. the takedown maneuver. What are the differences between the two from a visual standpoint? Is there a writeup in one of the books? I tried to find it. Thanks! Greywind
Legsweep is how it sounds; low spinning kick that knocks the legs out from under the target. Takedown, in my mind, tends to be like a wrestling takedown; tackle/grapple, target ends up pinned underneath you.
LoneWolf
Hero system allows a player to define most of the flavor on almost everything including martial maneuvers. Visually a maneuver can look like just about anything a players wants within reason. Either maneuver could have multiple different visual appearances. In some cases they may look identical; in others they could be completely different. You can freely change the name of the maneuver to whatever you want. If you look in Hero system martial arts book you will see a lot of the styles use standard maneuvers with different names. The real difference between them is that Legsweep is a more aggressive maneuver that does more damage. Takedown on the other had is more defensive and does less damage. A casual observer may find it hard to tell the difference between them.
mallet
It could also depend if a weapon is involved. I've seen a build (in fantasy hero) where it was built as a powerful blow with a weapon that drops a target. Specifically a Dwarf Fighter had Takedown with the weapon element War Hammer. So when using it he hit so hard and in such a way that the target would fall to the ground.
Tjack
In the real world a leg sweep leaves the attacker on their feet after completion. A successful takedown on the other hand has both attacker and defender on the ground. Put that in whatever game terms you want. I always GM’ed a leg sweep as a throw without the velocity bonus.
