Michael Hopcroft
Charles Aznavour, one of the greatest singers in French music, has passed away at the age of 94. I only recently discovered his music, and he leaves a great legacy. He recorded in several languages, including English. "She", "Yesterday, When I Was Young", "Dance in the Old-Fashioned Way", and "What Makes a Man" are among the most notable songs he recorded in English. He often sang and wrote with a haunting, mournful tone that implied wistfulness and loss. This religious song from him seems appropriate:
death tribble
He is probably most famous for the song She. He opened for Edith Piaf after the war and she helped him in his career. He was awarded Entertainer of the Century by CNN and Time Online in 1998 edging out Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. Last year he got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was also recognised for sheltering Jews and others persecuted by the Nazis. His last concert was on 19th September. Aged 94. That is some achievement He also did some acting with his best known role being part of the all star cast in And Then There Were None. Lord Liaden
I first became aware of him when he was a guest on The Muppet Show, of all places. Along with Edith Piaf, his was a voice that to me is quintessentially French. I can't say I feel sad he's gone, because he lived a rich life and leaves a beautiful legacy. Not to mention the New Wave classic Shoot the Piano Player.
Sundog
Aznavour was better than Sinatra, and I liked Sinatra.
tkdguy
I am so sad to hear of his passing. I have been a fan of Charles Aznavour since I was young.
