Lord Liaden
Not Metallo, different character. Often called "the Cyborg" or "the Cyborg Superman," but that tends to confuse him with the heroic Cyborg.
Christopher R Taylor
Which for me is even more confusing, because in the Justice League, they replaced Steel who was one of the new Supermen, with Cyborg for... reasons.
Greywind
Cyborg was more popular. Cyborg Superman was Henry Henshaw.
Christopher R Taylor
Yeah Cyborg, just plain Cyborg was a Teen Titan, and I liked the character, but I liked Steel a lot too. They rewrote Cyborg's story to be all about motherbox and Apocalips so it fits well with the movie idea (I'm sure he'll gain his superpowers in the film just like Justice League: War animated movie (from the Justice League: Origin comic -- almost certainly will be the film's basis as well). Greywind
They need to go back to his original origin.
Matt the Bruins
I'm pretty sure the Shaq movie deep-sixed any chance of Steel ever being part of the DCEU. That said, I can see the suits thinking that maybe a Superman-themed Iron Man knockoff wouldn't be sufficiently distinctive on a team that has at least two other people wearing high-tech armor and Superman himself returning as a major plot point. Cyborg has a backstory and power set that stands out a bit more from his peers.
Christopher R Taylor
I'm pretty sure the Shaq movie deep-sixed any chance of Steel ever being part of the DCEU. Probably, but DC has got to get past the "oops we made a crappy version of this character so we cannot ever use him again" syndrome. Marvel stumbled over and over with attempts until they got it right.
zslane
If they want an Iron Man knock-off, they could take a page from the CW roster book and add the Atom to the DCEU.
slikmar
actually, since 52 and Rebirth, I have seen John a lot. He is involved with Lana Lang (who has been Superwoman until recently). He has a niece who wears a similar armor to him. He has also gotten to be one of the goto scientists where supers are involved. Superman involved him anytime he needed scientific help a lot. Christopher R Taylor
That's cool. Steel is much less an Iron Man knockoff than Cyborg. He's just a brick with armor and a hammer, he's not full of weapons and gadgets or an AI.
rjcurrie
I think the reason that Cyborg has been chosen as the "black" Justice League member in both comics and movies is that he is an original black character as opposed to a spinoff of a white character like Steel (spun off from Superman and, at least last time I looked, wears the "S") or the John Stewart Green Lantern. Christopher R Taylor
I suspect the sudden, unexpected popularity of Iron Man plays a part as well.
zslane
Leave it to DC to be nearly a decade late to the "let's copy Marvel's biggest success" party.
Christopher R Taylor
I am not sure which reboot of Justice League he was swapped in, but I think its a while back now. Not long after Iron Man was a huge hit, I suspect.

Christopher R Taylor
So yeah that was 2011, by that point Iron Man 2 was out, Avengers was on the way. Definitely could have been an influence.
zslane
Oh, I thought we were talking about why Cyborg was added to the Justice League movie...
Christopher R Taylor
My guess is that DC is using the current Justice League lineup for their film like Marvel uses only their "ultimate" line for their movies. I prefer the classic Grant Morrison "pantheon" reboot in the 80s but that could just be because I was younger then. And I usually don't like Grant Morrison's work. slikmar
Oh, I thought we were talking about why Cyborg was added to the Justice League movie... I would say he is in the movie because he is currently in the JL. bigdamnhero
zslane
But is Cyborg in the (comics) JL because Iron Man was a hit in theaters in 2008, or because he was a member of the Teen Titans since the '80s and was bound for membership in the JL at some point anyway? The logic being offered is that a Marvel movie success prompted a DC comics editorial decision, which in turn led to a DC movie production not-so-indirectly riding the coat-tails of that Marvel success from nine years ago. I mean, I suppose you could say that any superhero movie today is riding the coat-tails of Marvel's success (which started with Iron Man in 2008), but isolating this one character is getting awfully specific. Yeah its just a supposition on my part, based on chasing market trends, etc. THey might have just liked him better because like rjcurrie says he's more distinct and solo rather than a kind of knockoff. Bazza
Another reason for including Cyborg is the abundance of technology in the world today. A "tech" or "hacker" character role is a must, either in the team, or in a supporting role. Christopher R Taylor

Christopher R Taylor
I have always liked Cyborg, yeah. I liked him better as a near-future genius ongoing project rather than a 5th world motherbox creation, but still he's pretty cool either way. I just really like John Henry and his big hammer.
