Steve
I've recently started re-reading my "Little Fears" rpg books, a horror/urban fantasy setting where the monsters children are afraid of are very real. Is there anyone else familiar with this setting? I'm wondering how it might be done in Hero.
Old Man
Never heard of it. It seems that you would have to have the rules for stealth, concealment, and attacking from behind down pat, since such monsters prefer that mode of attack. Teleport only when not in line of sight should be easy enough to model.
Cancer
The monster package probably has to include invisibility linked to some sort of mental or EGO attack. Perhaps knowledge adds. Sum all the character's skills and familiarities, including everyman skills; if the monster beats that total (HERO sense, rolls less than that on 3d6) then the monster is invisible to it. Then there's the inevitable question of "what about cameras?" which must have been addressed elsewhere.
Steve
From what I get from the source material, monsters are physical manifestations of fear that are unable to be seen by adults as they really are. Adults lack the belief ability to see them and rationalize what they are seeing into something more normal. That dog with the glowing eyes is just a mean dog. That goblin in the bushes is just an animal of some kind. Humans can also be directly controlled by the horrors of Closetland (the place where these things all come from). The Seven Deadly Sins are in charge there, and they can reach into our world to influence or outright control adults to do their will to terrorize and even harm or kill children. Steve
It's not really worse than playing Call of Cthulhu, but I admit having children as the protagonists makes it even more horrible in certain ways.
SteelCold
Like the Grim rpg from Fantasy Flight Games, give the kids Templates such as an athlete or bookworm or even a video/pen and paper gamer.

Lucius
Last October for the "Cthulhu Mashup" draft, my chosen genre to combine with cosmic horror was Children's Literature. My protagnists were the cast from Peanuts. My setting was Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary says that was almost a year ago now. Badger
Four posts in and this thread makes me want to sleep with the lights on already. Reminds me of my nightlight youth. They just made it worse. The shadows it created on the ceiling just looked like monsters looking down upon me.

"So....it's not that the world is out to get us or that it's full of monsters who want to be mean to us, but that it's just so much bigger and darker and colder than we imagine, and things like the warmth of the sun or the brightness of the stars are, are like little candles that will burn out or blow out in a sudden gust of wind, and the end is just darkness that goes on and on and the world and everything really don't belong to us but to weird THINGS that can live that cold and dark and and and....it all makes sense, it's just what I've always suspected. Good grief, I'm so depressed." And the antagonists? How soon they forget.... http://www.herogames.com/forums/topic/89971-cthulhu-mashup-superdraft-poll/ The Great Pumpkin of course. 1444665-the_great_pumpkin.jpg Only after my initial choice as eldritch horror was rejected. Lucius Alexander And no, it wasn't a palindromedary

I used to think I was just having a vivid nightmare, until my (now) wife heard me describe it and figured it out. Hasn't happened since.
