Logan D. Hurricanes
Shang-Chi is getting a lot of good buzz. I'm still not going to a theater right now, though.

Hugh Neilson
Enjoyed it. Not the classic comic book character, but between having no rights to Fu Manchu, not that the character would be acceptable in the 21st century anyway, and needing a character and a story that fits centrally in a super-heroic universe, it was pretty clear they weren't going that route. Personally, I ranking among MCU movies as tied for 5th/6th place with Spider-Man: Homecoming. He had to buy a Wednesday matinee ticket for the two of them.
Greywind
We need a Shang-Chi/Kwai Chang Caine fight for the title.
Pattern Ghost
Shang-Chi would probably turn Caine into a fine mist with the first hit, so probably not a good idea.
Lord Liaden
The original Kwai Chang's grandson (also played by David Carradine in the series Kung Fu: The Legend Continues) displayed a range of funky ch'i powers, and fought ghosts and demons. So don't count him out.
slikmar
Saw Shang-Chi. Enjoyed it for the Hong Kong movie it was, a lot. Even Akwafina, who normally annoys me, I liked. The use of Wong was great and the other character who was not in any previews I saw was fabulous.

mattingly
If "Crouching Tiger" and "Kill Bill" had a baby that was bitten by a radioactive "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Evil Dead" baby, that was raised on Miyazaki films and "Kung Fu Hustle", you'd get "Shang-Chi." Scott Ruggels
Total holiday weekend take was $127 million, if it has legs, it will be a total success, though will entirely vindicate ScarJo’s lawsuit. Second weekend’s box office take will determine the sales trajectory of the film. https://ombreviews.com/box-office-tracking/

Scott Ruggels
Success of theatrical release may change how future releases are handled by Disney. The Eternals may be theatrical only, as well, due to the modest success of Shang Chi. https://variety.com/2021/film/box-office/marvel-shang-chi-box-office-eternals-disney-plus-1235056957/
Bazza
Since Feige felt that Black Widow was demoted with an initial release on Disney+ I think that the plan always was for all movies to be cinema-only initial releases. There was no “experiment”.
zslane
Shang Chi's box office was not much different than Black Widow's (which would have been even higher if it had been shown in China, a situation every studio is struggling with not just Disney). However, Shang Chi missed out on $50-60M in PVOD revenue that Black Widow enjoyed. Johannsen's lawsuit is dead in the water since this shows that going theatrical-only brings in less money than day-and-date release in theaters and PVOD. Johannsen's lawsuit is dead in the water since this shows that going theatrical-only brings in less money than day-and-date release in theaters and PVOD. It's too early to say that. The movie has been out for one week and has higher reviews than Black Widow. It already has over 50 percent of Black Widow's gross. If it has better performance in weeks 2-4 then we'll get a better comparison. Plus how does this invalidate ScarJo's lawsuit? The crux of that is that Disney doesn't want to give her a cut of streaming sales because it would also then be possible to determine steaming's income and that would lead to bigger paydays for the actors. archer
zslane
The core argument in her lawsuit is that Disney sabotaged her payout by not releasing it exclusively in theaters. It will be pretty trivial for Disney to show that Black Widow earned more by being released day-and-date with PVOD than Shang Chi did being released only in theaters, especially if you subtract Chinese box office results in order to make the comparison apples-to-apples. csyphrett
Plus the whole point of the BW thing was to boost their streaming service for their investors. Iger and Capinek both got big bonuses from that. The whole reason why they asked for arbitration is that they want to deny Johassen's claim that her movie could have made more money as theater only, and get around her contract that asked for an exclusive showing at the theaters before going to streaming without showing the numbers for the streaming service. It's the same sort of thing Disney has done in the past to get out of paying its commitments. They are almost Trump bad about that sort of thing CES
