Christopher R Taylor
Personally, I think they should avoid a twenty-something for the role and go for someone at least thirty-ish. The reason they go young for franchise parts is that it takes years between films, and years aren't kind on actresses particularly in their 30s. megaplayboy
There's a 10 year gap between Iron Man I and Infinity War. That's also about as long as the average 007 actor lasts. So it makes sense to cast a little bit on the younger side, because you might need them around in 10 years. Christopher R Taylor
Pattern Ghost
Agreed on the reasoning. Still, Carol always struck me as a more mature, commanding figure. Bazza
zslane
I see Theron's age as far less of a problem than Hollywood producers do, but I'm sure it is one (of several) reasons Marvel never even considered her.
Ranxerox
Agreed on the reasoning. Still, Carol always struck me as a more mature, commanding figure. Yeah, but we are use to a Carol that has been a hero for a while. Originally, she looked like this ...

Christopher R Taylor
She was very strange at first. She would pass out and then Ms Marvel would 'show up' and it wasn't exactly clear for certain that she was the hero. She had some strange psychoses as well, I thought it wasn't a very well considered character, particularly for their first really major female star. Greywind
She was a perfectly normal secondary character in Captain Mar-Vell's story. It was after the hit from the psyche-magnetron that her life got weird. And then Rogue happened.
Lord Liaden
Carol Danvers has had a particularly long and convoluted journey to becoming the superhero she is today. Her movie would have to cut through most of that to bring her directly to something resembling her current comic-book state.
Christopher R Taylor
In her case I hope they come up with something totally new because her backstory is not very good
bigbywolfe
I thought the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon did a decent job with her origin. Obviously it didn't match the comics, but it involved the Kree and was a good shortcut to get to the character powered up and in play. Starlord
I'm assuming they will use the Kree in some manner as they've been introduced into the MCU already.

Christopher R Taylor
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes was a terrific reboot of the Avengers storyline while being faithful to the comics and having a wonderful feel to it. Instead the powers that be at Marvel have their "ultimate" universe they prefer above all things and that dumb cartoon got in the way, so cancel it and replace it with crap! But the crap fits their preferred storyline, even if its worse!
Lawnmower Boy
Agreed on the reasoning. Still, Carol always struck me as a more mature, commanding figure. I don't think that there's any question that a huge part of the appeal of the modern Captain Marvel is that she is a Woman of a Certain Age, saying something about how there's life after 40 (50, etc). Charlize Theron (41) would be perfect to play her now. The problem is the multi-movie contract, and I see Marvel's point. It's not necessarily that big of a deal, in that Downey was 43 when he played Iron Man for the first time. So Theron's timeline works for Marvel, assuming that the superhero craze lasts as long as the Western one, although it might be argued that Captain Marvel is inherently a more stunt-heavy role than Iron Man. The question is whether Marvel wants to take that risk with another headliner when it can look to a woman in her 30s. Given Hollywood's unrealistic beauty expectations and movie magic, 30-something and 50-something will both pass. I'm sure that sixty-something will, too. i guess the question comes down to money and stuntwork.
Christopher R Taylor
Fair or not, men age better than women do in terms of Hollywood looks. According to women I know, many men get better looking as they age. This is not so about women except in very rare instances. That's just the nature of a visual medium. megaplayboy
Or maybe the origin story could be abbreviated rather than half the movie. I suspect the ease of using cliche tropes is part of the appeal of origin story plotlines.
Pattern Ghost
I was wondering if there was any exploding alien tech in any of the prior movies they could use. Like, "Remember when you blew up that _____ in the battle of _____? I was there, on the ground. Got dosed with weird science." Bam! Done. Her powers don't really require an origin story unless they're bringing in Mar Vel and/or setting up the Kree for a bigger part in the MCU. If it's going to be a prelude to more Kree stuff, than an origin story that fits in a Kree plot would be fine. Bazza
Or skip the Kree and go for Brood, I mean broke. Her origin story could be told in a 5-15 min flashback, or as a prequel to the title sequence.

Christopher R Taylor
I agree, get the origin over with fast as a quick flashback, or just don't even bother. She just has powers. Who cares why or how? Lets just get to the story. Maybe she'll explain later, but do we really need to know? Nope. And I doubt anyone really cares.
