Re: Ctrl+V

People are always complaining how you can tell the difference between real and replicated food. I'd say it's fairly obvious that, while replicators are good in some ways, they have limitations. And they can't replicate entire ships. They can do some components, but there are materials that can't be replicated.

272. Take a drink when your GM takes it as a personal insult when he comes across any of these things from the "Things Mr Welch is No Longer Allowed To Do in an RPG":

  • 360. I must remind the GM that my Blessed can Raise Dead before he runs another murder mystery again.
  • 840. Even if it would have immediately solved the last six adventures, I won't throw dynamite in every well I come across.
  • 1052. I’m not automatically eliminated from the crappy module if I guess the wrong murderer like in Clue. So I should stop making random accusations.

Background/History: Bill Ettin Had always been fascinated by art. As a child he preferred crayons, paints, and clay to any other toys. Had he not been athletically talented as well these interests may have subjected him to teasing and bullying, but his early childhood was quite pleasant.

Then he began to grow fast - too fast - and his STR grew even more than his height. When other children rejected him in fear and hatred, he withdrew deeper into the world of art. Encouraged by his parents, who did not like to see him to isolated, he began taking martial arts instruction as well. That ended when he injured a fellow student accidentally.

As he became an adult, he continued to grow larger, stronger, uglier. In looks he was an ogre, but his soul was always that of an artist struggling to create beauty.

A starving artist. Until the day a running superbattle passed through the park where he was quietly trying to sketch a landscape. In a fit of pique he grabbed the fellow who knocked over his easel and tossed him through two trees; then he remembered what he'd learned in the dojo and carefully restrained two more miscreants (one with each hand) without injuring them. Shortly after turning them over the authorities, he found himself talking to reporters; and shortly after that he found his work was in demand.

Hey, if fighting crime sells art, why not? Besides, some people like him now. He's never stopped thinking, when dealing with these fans, "where were you when I was hungry and alone?" but he knows he is grateful for the attention and somehow, he's always felt the right thing to do is to be kind to people. And he likes this group of superheroes who are becoming the first real friends he's had in a long time. And it's not as dangerous as it looks. He learned the hard way he's nearly bulletproof.

Personality/Motivation: Bill Ettin is above all an artist. If he finds a way to express his creativity in superheroics, he will embrace the role of costumed adventurer enthusiastically; if it never inspires him then it will be only a gimmick for selling what he thinks of as his real work, or something he does out of loyalty to the heroes he has befriended. It takes him a long time to open up and trust people, but someone who has his trust and respect has a devoted friend.

Bill Ettin has two secrets. One is that he has never been physically intimate with a woman, not only because few women have ever seen past his ugliness and awkwardness, but because he fears that his size and strength would make him a dangerous partner. The other is that his original name was William Trow; he changed his name and moved to the city to prove that he could make it on his own without his family's help. Now that he is famous he has again established contact with his parents, but keeps his origins a secret still out of fear for their safety.

Quote: If you buy it, of course I'll deliver it myself. There's no other way to move it without risking damage. Just be sure you have a reinforced floor that can take the weight....

Powers/Tactics: Big, strong, tough, and durable, Bill Ettin is also surprisingly fast and graceful. His greatest weakness is that, for a superhero, he has very limited movement. But if he can manage to close to hand to hand, he can use his judo training and good old superstrong punching and kicking to good effect. At first, he will likely follow the lead of other team members and readily try anything suggested; with time he may develop creative tactics of his own.

Appearance: Standing just over two meters tall, Bill Ettin is large, gangly, and ugly enough to frighten children. Since he began hanging around with people in capes, he's designed a costume based on a circus strongman image and began to bill himself as "The Artist of Strength" "The Giant Genius" and similar nicknames, covering up his essential shyness with a persona that is part "eccentric artist" and part "muscle bound braggart and showoff."
