Ragitsu
If you were designing a planet for recreation, be it for yourself, tourists, or both, what would you want it to include? Go nuts with geography, climate, weather, flora/fauna (if you desire such things at all) and technology (ditto). Science "realism" is no limit. Steve
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet Actually, with realism having no limit, you don't even need a planet. You can set up hotels or gaming centers in your neighborhood or even a room of your house with highly advanced "reality matrices" (like Star Trek-style holodecks, but can perfectly recreate any environment or location desired). austenandrews
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet For sure you'd have loads of carefully-crafted paradisical locations - I'm thinking thousands of islands of various sizes and climates - plus weather control on at least local scale. Maybe the islands can be moved around into desired configurations.

megaplayboy
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet Keep in mind that they might have to cater to fairly diverse concepts of pleasure--a Xenovore's idea of what's edifying(killing and eating other sapients) will be quite different from a Vulcan's(contemplating a complicated logical puzzle while in an aesthetically pleasing setting), which in turn will be different from a Klingon or Saiyan's(battle, piles of strange food, and rough sex). Susano
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet What do you mean by the latter? Culture orbitals are basically mini-ringworlds. Instead of having one big one, they place multiple orbitals in single solar system.
Eldos
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet I think what Ragitsu is looking for here is what he can put on a pleasure planet he is designing for a game. Thus, my suggestions are as follows:- 1) Several accommodation complexes near the starport catering from budget to extravagant. This should probably be set up in something like an idyllic beach area where people are comfortable in shirt sleeves ect. 2) A casino – what better way to separate the tourists from their money than games of chance. 3) Beaches – Holiday goers love quiet beaches and this doesn’t cost the management anything. 4) Sporting events – A few stadiums with major sporting events (or even minor ones that the guests can participate in) could be a drawcard and could create plot devises for you to use later on. 5) Historical sites – Another thing to bring tourists to your planet is if there are some sites of historical interest. Old battlefields, ruins, etc all bring academics to come and look at them. 6) Adventure – There could be other areas on the planet where adventure tourism could take place. Hiking, skydiving, white-water rafting, skiing, etc. Could take place. There are other ideas for food tourism, eco-tourism, etc. But these would probably not be on a specific ‘pleasure planet’. Hope this is helpful.

BobGreenwade
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet Eldos got a lot of my thoughts down already. Halcyon, in Worlds of Empire, is a big step in the right direction for a "pleasure planet." Most of its activities are divided into areas, so people with quieter interests won't be disturbed by those of a wilder bent. You can have several places with quiet, sandy beaches, but each has its own flavor: one has little more than that plus hotels, golf courses, and other low-key interests, while another has a bunch of casinos, another has adrenaline-pumped recreation of which skiing and surfing are only the beginning (the beach here isn't all that quiet any more), and another has a strip of brothels with android courtesans. For the first on that list, the beach is the point for coming; for the rest, it's a secondary feature. A similar approach can be taken for snowy mountains, extensive forests, or other popular terrains. Each area probably would have one large (or at least large-ish) city, and several smaller communities. The larger cities would have everything one needs to stay connected (whatever the setting's equivalent is to phone, television, and Internet), the smaller communities would have just the basics, and of course there would be a few resorts that deliberately withhold those amenities, just as there are on Earth today. (Of course, "large" is relative. If the planet's population is very sparse, a city of 25,000 becomes a major metropolis.) Besides the various opportunities for peaceful relaxation, adventure vacationing, and debauchery, there are other reasons people travel to vacation sites. To address my own interest, some go places for the opportunity to visit great entertainment venues, such as we currently have in Las Vegas, New York, or Branson. On a true pleasure planet, there should be at least once area noted for its great philharmonic orchestra, opera company, live theater venues (probably including one specializing in Shakespeare, and another in Disney), music and variety shows, jazz festival, and similar attractions. Those are the thoughts I can manage right at present.
Susano
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet Don't forget the hunting preserve, where you can pursue the best beasts the galaxy has to offer. Also, theme places (i.e. Westworld, Romanworld, Medievalworld) and so on. Also, if you have serious holographic and/or artificial person capabilities, you could go beyond xyz-world and venture into Fantasy Island territory, with full-blown experiences tailor-made to the individual visitor. austenandrews
Re: Build a Pleasure Planet Fantasy Island is a good template. Crank out loads of disposable androids, externally controlled, to precisely match the customer's specifications. Recycle them when the trip is over. For that matter, allow visitors to assume new android bodies Avatar-style. Then turn them loose into insane gladiatorial arenas, cities of winged people or merfolk, etc.
