Maccabe
So here I sit thinking about building a HERO supers game, but wondering where it will be set. I mean New York is so overdone, and everybody knows Metropolis , Gotham City, etc I wanted to do something at least somewhat original but wondered what to call the city in question. Where do my fellow heroes out there get the names of the cities they base their games in? I wasn't looking for names of 'real world' cities but fictional ones instead. Any help would be appreciated....

Escafarc
Re: naming a city for a supers campaign Haven. Going all the way back to when I started gaming in the late '70s. The city I live in is called Winter Haven and it sort of grew from there. I've used it in just about every genre.

assault
Re: naming a city for a supers campaign Campaigne City. Named after the Marquis de Campaigne. There's actually a place named Villainville in France. Adding one to the US or Canada would be easy. Geographic features are always good: River City, etc. Townsville is, of course, a real place. Perhaps you could have a Metro City or something of the sort. Some names are so common that you can always add a new one. Springfield comes to mind. Geographical location: Central City, Coast City. Founder's name, or the name of someone the founder wants to honour: Bismarck, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne... New Somewhere: New York, New Orleans. Otherwise descriptive: Ivy Town (has an Ivy League college) This page is interesting, as is this one.

GoldenAge
Re: naming a city for a supers campaign Here's a definition of the naming of Epic City and a partial list of the 50 City States of the United Societies (from my Epic City game)... The names of the City States are loosely based on nick names and/or pseudonyms of existing cities: During the early years of the North American occupation by Western European adventurers there arose several circumstances that led to the adoption of the classic City-State government found in ancient Greece. The first major city founded in the North American region was Epic City. Its founders named Epic City after the Athenian atomist philosopher Epicurus who regarded sense perception as the only basis for knowledge. He considered the highest good to be pleasure, but this meant freedom from pain and emotional upheaval, achieved not through sensual indulgence but through the practice of virtue… Epicurus’ Athenian origin and his admiration of the polis (City-State) heavily influenced the United Societies of America’s forefathers. Though the forefather’s approbation for Epicurus assured the adoption of the city-state form of government there remained several other reasons for its adoption. Beyond sentiment the first reason that North America was dominated by small city-states and independent towns, rather than by one all-powerful king, was its geography. The eastern part of the region consisted of mountainous terrain, many isolated valleys, and numerous offshore islands, which encouraged the formation of many local centers of power, rather than one all-powerful capital. Another key factor influencing the formation of city-states rather than kingdoms was the Atlantic Ocean and the many rivers that flowed into its waters. Such an easily navigable sea and adjoining waterways provided the early North Americans with an opportunity to found new colonies in times of crisis and overpopulation. It also appealed to their sense of heroism and adventure. A final reason behind the development of city-states was the remnants of European aristocracy, who acted to prevent any permanent monarchies from forming. They defended the political independence of their cities vigorously. As a result any individual who did manage to take over a city could only hope to do so for a short time as a 'tyrant' rather than a king. Eventually, as major cities grew and their jurisdiction swallowed up smaller cities it became apparent that a city-state confederacy must be established to protect the rights of the cities and the yet unclaimed territories surrounding them. States were later formed and in response the Federal Government of the United States of America was created. The union of the states lasted until Reunification Day July 4th, 1874. Querysphinx
Re: naming a city for a supers campaign There is a place called "Normal" in Illinois. It is a perfect place for a zero point hero game... I've never used a fictional city for a Champion's game, though if I did it would probably be Paradox City. casualplayer
Re: naming a city for a supers campaign New Amsterdam? I normally use real cities because of the gobs of reference maps and photos available. San Angelo was a fun read and I like what HERO did with Millenium City but I'm a big fan of the GM principle of "Why create what you can swipe?" Cancer
Re: naming a city for a supers campaign We have tended to use fictionalized versions of real cities (usually Seattle, where we live) for this sort of thing, since that provides a social, economic, and geographical context that everyone in the group knows without a lot of work ahead of time.
