Nyrath
http://www.universetoday.com/2010/01/04/could-a-faraway-supernova-threaten-earth/ This threat is only mildly threatening, compared to others I have mentioned. T Pyxidis might become a type Ia supernova, the most destructive of them all. But: it probably will not explode with that force for a minimum of ten thousand years, and it is about 3,000 light years away. It is at the extreme limit of range. It may affect the ozone layer, but it is not going to burn Earth to a blackened cinder.

Cancer
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? Question is can it hit a moving target at that range? That's why it bought the Explosion advantage to its Blast attack.

RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? I think so, but then you're talking about a really BIG hole in the universe if you don't want the Die damage to degrade to much. That though opens up some possible campaign issues to be dealt with though. Such as what has happened in oh, Marvel's War of Kings, Chalkers Well World, and a few other "You blew a freaking Hole in the Universe and now it's deflating!" stories..... ~Rex
Old Man
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? But what if it goes hypernova? http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/features/news/20may99.html
RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? Still. VERY far away. Lot of stuff between Us and Them, and again, Moving Target. I think Asteroid or Comet has a better chance of offing us, then Stellar Explosions. ~Rex

RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? My Power Gamer player would have some sort of 1 shot unbeatable defense for it. ~Rex

RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? More like the SFX being a P.I.T.A. .......Though I think in this case he would use some sort of triggered Extra Dimensional Movement. ~Rex
Cancer
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? Meh, mess with his SFX, that neutrinos mess with whatever mechanism he's using. There's about a factor of 100 more energy in the neutrinos than in the photons, so if he's worried about photons at all, there's plenty of energy available to mess with anything. Tapping it is an issue in the real world, but if you just say that the tachyon phase space is overfilled by the particles scattered by the neutrino pulse so he can't make the jump without losing temporal-physical waveform integrity, it'll hose his XDM just fine ... and your rubber physics will trump his. (Clearly, I have a dim view of power gamers.)
RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? Heh, unfortunately, my Loaf of Gamer Kung Fu being so much more then His, is what has Generated this monstrosity of a power gamer in the first place. It's a very, Victor and the Monster situation unfortunately. ~Rex......Sometimes....Players feel they need to be able to BEAT the GM for some reason. Old Man
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? I've had sessions where I was astonished that both my PC and the GM himself survived.
RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? Had more then a few of those myself, heh. They can be interesting especially when the rest of the party turns on the guy for being to much of a potential threat, because if he DOES get into a fight with someone his "skill of power gaming", the radioactive wasteland that remains of the battlefield afterwards, doesn't mesh well with the thinking of the less PG'ed players. ~Rex

RexMundi
Re: Could A Faraway Supernova Threaten Earth? Yeah, but that's still coming from something really far away, going towards something that's moving as well, and there should be a whole lot of other stuff in the way as well. Otherwise every time these things go boom, there would be a lot of nothing up there. Of course, for all we know, Everything already went Boom, and there really IS nothing up there anymore. ~Rex
