Hey' date=' I recognize that name! They've been making wild claims about ultracapacitors for a while.[/quote']

First line in the article:

EEStor, the ultracapacitor company that has produced more obscure technology milestone announcements than evidence of a working energy storage unit,

Wouldn't a capacitor that huge be very dangerous? Touch both poles of the capacitor accidentally and zap! You're dead? And you can bet someone would be stupid enough to do that deliberately' date=' probably on a triple dog dare.[/quote']

Energy is energy. A stick of dynamite, a full gasoline tank, a capacitor, and batteries all contain large amounts of energy.

You may have heard about the rash of computer laptop batteries suddenly catching on fire.

Automobile crashes are dangerous since leaking gasoline might catch on fire.

And if you stick a metal object into an electrical wall socket you could be killed.

This has implications for directed energy weapons. Especially laser pistols.

I had heard about the laptop batteries, but didn't realize it was that. . .explosive:nonp:.

As for capacitors it was my understanding that without a resistor, they discharged all their energy at once, unlike a battery which does it over a greater period of time.

Lastly, Laser pistols, me want one!:D

Energy storage technologies vary in both energy density (how much energy they contain) and power density (how fast they can dump that energy); on average, technologies that are better at the first are worse at the second (in part because technologies are only used if they have some advantage).

However, any battery capable of powering a car will be able to kill a human, no problem, because it takes far more power to run a car than it takes to kill a human.
