Kraven Kor
http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/10/eestor/ Article is light on details and seems to be more about how the company hasn't actually released a product yet, but still... A capacitor that can give an electric car a 300 mile range? Sounds awesome to me. {Morbo}CAPACITORS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!{/Morbo}

paladin.oa
Re: Cool, possibly vapor-ware, new capacitor tech Wouldn't a capacitor that huge be very dangerous? Touch both poles of the capacitor accidentally and zap! You're dead? And you can bet someone would be stupid enough to do that deliberately, probably on a triple dog dare. A stick of dynamite, a full gasoline tank, a capacitor, and batteries all contain large amounts of energy. You may have heard about the rash of computer laptop batteries suddenly catching on fire. http://gizmodo.com/182257/dell-laptop-explodes-in-flames Automobile crashes are dangerous since leaking gasoline might catch on fire. And if you stick a metal object into an electrical wall socket you could be killed. This has implications for directed energy weapons. Especially laser pistols. http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/rocket3l.html#lasermagazine

As for capacitors it was my understanding that without a resistor, they discharged all their energy at once, unlike a battery which does it over a greater period of time. Lastly, Laser pistols, me want one!

Touch both poles of the capacitor accidentally and zap! You're dead? Certainly, but it's not particularly a new issue. There are currently capacitors in use with far more energy than necessary to kill a human being.

However, any battery capable of powering a car will be able to kill a human, no problem, because it takes far more power to run a car than it takes to kill a human. Duke Bushido
Re: Cool, possibly vapor-ware, new capacitor tech Precisely. I've never ripped open a modern flat-screen television, but the old CRT tube sets are just filled with things that'll stop a heart in an instant.
