Odraude
Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ararat_anomaly This area would be interesting for a ruins adventure. The anomaly is said to have been the remains of Noah's Ark. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transantarctic_Mountains Upon the southern continent lies... the mountains of madness And there is Mt Erebus, an active volcano in the Antarctic. Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. Why not both? Also he has a sister mountain called Mount Terror

Vondy
Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy Looking over your full list at Pencil-Pushers' date=' Eosin, I notice you're more interested in large-scale architecture than I realized at first. In that case, let me direct you to the ancient Middle Eastern city of Petra, an artificial "oasis" amidst a rocky desert, holding a vast collection of temples, tombs, and other monuments literally carved out of the cliffs surrounding the city. This "virtual tour" of Petra displays more of the ancient monuments: http://www.raingod.com/angus/Gallery/Photos/MiddleEast/Jordan/Petra/ One of our show hosts makes a living as a tour guide and does frequent trips to Petra. I want to go on one.

Odraude
Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy Erebus was the one that tourist plane flew straight into under white-out conditions Yup. A shame that happened. Erebus is an amazing site to behold. It actually has lava glowing from its tippy top. Amazing having lava in such a frozen wasteland. Excellent for a group of PCs trying to fight a rimefire elemental or even two separate elementals of fire and ice. I like how it brings up the Frost poem in my mind. A pic of it from above. You can see the lava. A close up of the steaming caldera And here is the book by HP Lovecraft that should give some ideas for a story here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_the_Mountains_of_Madness

Markdoc
Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy The photo above is at Ayutthaya in Thailand. I've been there a few years back and it's pretty cool. It used to be the capital of the old siamese kingdom (it's the place Tony Jaa goes to attempt his revenge in Ong Bak 2) but was trashed by the invading Burmese. Today, it's several square kilometers of ruins. The "Buddha head in the fig tree" is the most famous sight, but some of the old temple remains are IMO much more interesting - if you google "Ayutthaya" you will get more interesting images than you can shake a beheaded buddha at. It's also easy to reach by train from Bangkok - if you start early in the day, it makes a great day trip. Here's an example: You can walk up the steps on the central penis-shaped building and go inside, then investigate the small dark shrines inside: you can wander pretty much wherever you like on the site. cheers, Mark

Shadowsoul
Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy Nowhere near as exotic as most places on this thread but it does fit the criteria. The original Cambridge is definitely a fantasy city. Unfortunately I can only work with reusable pictures here as I only took one photo while I was there.
