Dreamwalker

I'm currently building a character of a race that someone else had built and left very, very vague.

There is an ability called "Dreamwalking" which has been broadly defined as:

"This species' beliefs and practices revolve around manipulation of the dreaming world in order to alter the waking"

It is important to note that this is a world almost devoid of "Magic" in the old fireball sense, however mentalists are relatively common.

It is also important to note that this is a 250 point character.

I'm really hitting a brick wall on which direction to take this poorly defined ability. Some suggestions would defiantly help. Thanks!

Re: Dreamwalker

Start by identifying what 'Alter the Waking' has meant in the past and now means to you. Once you've identified how the world is affected, it usually becomes pretty simple (if not inexpensive) to heroize it. So

Give People Nightmares might become a Drain vs. Int, Ego, Pre and Maybe Str, Con, Dex and End (Doesn't effect people w/ Doesn't need to sleep) as they are exhausted the next day. Expensive but doable.

And go from there.

I tend to stay away from Extra Dimensional Movement for wonky things unless there's absolutely no other choice. Since we're talking effects the real world you shouldn't need it.

Re: Dreamwalker

Yeah, you are making the common mistake when looking at this kind of thing of getting drawn into the colour.

What can the dreamwalking achieve? If it is very much based on some activity that can be endless then you are looking at a VPP that is limited on some kind of RSR (which is used to simulate the effort while dreamwalking).

The true element of this ability is that of altering the waking world. The dream walking aspect is SFX even if it could be roleplayed to good effect.

Re: Dreamwalker

Well what are dreams? Are they things that could be and that you can achieve easier if you understand them better? Maybe you could have a general skill level or some char. increase limited to affecting what you dreamed of last night (limitation level depends on how restrictively the GM interprets this) maybe with a RSR to dream constructively. So for instance you could dream about being in the king's court and interacting with the courtiers and basically practice your skills in preparation. When you actually meet go to court next day you'll have a better idea what to do because the dream gave you information. How did it get information that you don't have? Well that's the mystery.
