God of Prosperity?

Hello all,

I'm working through a bit more of my game world and it being 3 in the morning, I'm hitting a bit of a stump.

I'm working on some background stuff and was wondering what the tasks would be for a mortal that is contacted by the god of Prosperity and ordained to be that gods agent among the mortals.

Ding! "You are now my agent among Men. Go forth and spread my word!"

or something along those lines...:king:

Re: God of Prosperity?

Off the top of my head

If prosperity is considered a tangible thing in your world, then removing it from those who are prosperous without giving proper thanks and respect to the God of Prosperity and giving it to those who do. (For example Evil Godwin stole prosperity in the form of a crystal wine glass. Whoever drinks from it monthly gains Luck only effecting business transactions, fetch it and return it to the temple/give it to Good Evelynn who while poor still thanks the God for what she has.)

Teach a village to fish or some other task that will allow them to become more prosperous. ( Obvious adventure hook: Evil Godwin wants the village to remain poor so that they will have to continue to do his bidding to survive and opposes your group first subtlely then more aggressively)

Re: God of Prosperity?

Make small business loans; he is tasked to find those worthy poor who will take small gifts of wealth and bring prosperity to their communities.

Find out why a particular community is trapped in poverty and do something about it, not by giving gifts alone but by solving the problem. Drive off a local gang of bandits, force a corrupt official to stop bleeding the citizens dry, teach a craft that can turn around the fortunes of a village, whatever.

You could get an interesting campaign out of trying to set up banks and a postal service in cities and villages, or go one step earlier and supervise the construction of roads and aqueducts to make trade possible and allow cities to grow.

Re: God of Prosperity?

All sorts of plot hooks possible, cryptic missions from the God.

Example: God appears in a vison, says "Travel to Alexandria, tell them no cats may be killed." If the PC convinces the head of the city to issue a decree forbidding the killing of cats, the city prospers. If not, rats overrun the city the next year, the grain harvest fails, and the city is stricken with plague the year after.

Re: God of Prosperity?

Fight the minions of the God of Poverty. (Bimbo no Kami, in Japan--he appeared several times in GeGeGe no Kitaro, and is a main character in Kamichu.)

Teach wise resource management to the ruler's chief adviser. Perhaps sending prophetic dreams.

Negotiate with other gods' agents when the prosperity of a community conflicts with their sphere of influence. (For example, the gold mining operation of a town is polluting the river, angering the Water God.)

Re: God of Prosperity?

He could actively promote the unfettered working of the Invisible Hand (or should that be the Divine Hand?) as described by Adam Smith. He'll go around hunding insider trading, denouncing lackey's of the king who get exclusive contracts they don't deserve and so forth.

A more peaceful (but influential) one would help negotiate trade rights between nations on the verge of (financially ruinous) war.

A simple one would advise people on investment and insurance plans.

Re: God of Prosperity?

A good quest would be to find or open a new trade trade route - find one (under more or less divine guidance), a la the Northwest Passage, or the Straits of Magellan, or a major mountain pass. Open one that is either unknown or was taken over by bad guys years/centuries ago. One is more exploration, the other could be as "simple" as cleaning out critters, or as intricate as undoing a major curse (or even negotiating roads and tolls).

Similarly, finding or re-opening a precious resource - anything from a gold mine to a new spice or medicine.

On a less earth-shaking level, tasks such as escorting a trade caravan (or organizing one), carrying an item (records or precious goods or a key) to a particular place, defending or protecting a place or person from bandits - or even taking part in raids against an authority force which imposes unfair or unreasonable taxes.
