Why have his movies fascinated us so? Even the bad ones are seen by millions, even the terrible ones grace our cable-provided television sets on every lazy afternoon we can make time for. What's his secret? Sure, he's muscular and well groomed, but there are plenty of others like that who we wouldn't pay money to see. Sure, he's got some kind of strange, oft misunderstood charm -- but so does the mating process of mantises, and nobody's paying money to see that. He's not really that great of an actor, at least when compared to people who've gotta make it on their acting abilities alone. I think everyone just secretly delights in the idea of being one of Arnold's pals. Come on, name someone you'd rather go to a cigar lounge with. Name someone you'd rather beat at Connect-Four. That's right, folks. Arnold is your platonic crush. You can't escape it, but fortunately, no one will catch on just because you watch his movies. Pretty much the coolest on screen realization of an alien ever, even better than well, the 'Aliens'. So many cool moments in that movie and it was the ultimate one on one showdown at the end. As for real arnie fans, when anyone prefaces a particular group with the exclusive "real" it pretty much indicates the discussion is a non-starter. Its like talking about "real americans," "real princesses," and the like. Its a call to implied and mythic authority and really means, "no matter what you say, I'm right." And since this whole thread is based on our subjective views of Arnie's top adversaries I don't see how getting pedantic about Catacomb's rhetoric really helps.
