OddHat
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? What is Bowing Day? It's the day when Japanese bow just a little bit too deeply, in a sarcastic manner, then laugh hysterically to themselves at the izakaya as they relive, again and again, their triumphant moment of defiance. (The above was a complete joke. Any truth included in said joke was purely for comedic purposes. Jokes made on the Hero boards do not reflect the opinions of DoJ, Cryptic Studios, their employees, minions or lackeys. Except Bill Keys jokes; everything he says is exactly what we really think. Go on, try suing; we're internet gamers led by a lawyer, you'll never take us a court.) (The above statement was also a joke, and in very poor taste. Those responsible have been shot.) L. Marcus
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? . . . I hear there are sometimes bowing accidents in Japan. Sometimes lethal ones. And my sensei got hitched a week ago in Yokohama, in a Shinto ceremony.

Dholcrist
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Valkyrie. Pretty good, though not amazing. Visually very well done, conveyed the story rather well, and had a great cast. Unfortunately, the cast was a little too... international. The mix of accents that were all supposed to be actually speaking German was a little jarring from time to time, especially Cruise. Just weird when you had secretaries with German accents speaking to someone with a British accent being yelled at someone with an American accent. Other than that and a few other small things, pretty good overall.
Dr. Confoundo
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Expiration dates on the bullets are coming up... Well it's a good thing that I watched Shoot Em Up last night then... they went through enough bullets in that movie to fill a dump truck. I found it quite amusing. You gotta love a movie with a free-fall gunfight. My wife, OTOH, was not particularly fond of it. Women... sheesh.

Watched it for the first time about two weeks ago. Any movie that has so many casualties that over a dozen people die in the sex scene, I'm happy. Clive Owen is a good man. Guest Major Tom
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? WARNING: SLIGHTLY LONG POST WITH SPOILERS. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. Well, what with the typical New Year's suckage that was on the tube (all those cable and satellite channels, and you still can't find anything that's worth watching []), I decided to rent some films that I hadn't seen yet: Cloverfield, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man. Cloverfield struck me as a rather depressing rehash of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, only told from the viewpoint of some (ultimately-doomed) shmuck with a camcorder (given that this is a J.J. Abrams movie, I guess I should have expected this). On the other hand, I liked The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, in spite of the fact that the origin stories for both characters were folded, spindled, and mutilated (read as "updated for the modern era"); in Iron Man's defense, though, I do have to admit that for the most part the basic theme was kept (Stark building his first crude suit in a cave in Afghanistan instead of a jungle lab in North Vietnam, and assisted by an East European scientist instead of a Chinese one -- at least they kept the Yinsen name). I think what surprised me about The Incredible Hulk was the fact that, instead of being a follow-up to the first film, it told an entirely different tale of the Hulk's origin compared to the first (it was still the result of a medical experiment gone wrong, but in this version there was an underhanded pur- pose to the experiment, in that the real objective was to find military appli- cations for Banner's work). There were a couple of nice touches in the film in that, not only did Lou Ferrigno make a cameo apperance (just as he did in the first film), they also included the "Lonely Man" theme from the '80s TIH series. A couple of things that I find neat about the current crop of Marvel superfilms (not just these particular ones) are that not only is Stan Lee doing the Hitch- cock/M. Night schitck of appearing in the films featuring his characters, but they're also ending them in such a way that you're left expecting a sequel. I particularly liked the way that they tied TIH and IM together at the end of each film -- especially the bit at the end of IM where Hollywood's very own Mr. Baaaad-A$$ himself, Samuel L. Jackson, put in an appearance as Nick Fury. I can just hear the line now: "That's it! I have had it with these Hydra agents on this Helicarrier!" Susano
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? I just watched Iron Man myself. They are setting things up for an Avengers move, what with a Thor and Captain America movie in the works.

Let's not forget the instances of Death By Carrot that were in this film (for the record, I'm only counting those instances in which the carrot itself was the weapon, and not as a means of using another weapon). I hadn't thought of it in this context until this post, but with all the mooks that got scragged in that particular scene, wouldn't that make Shoot 'Em Up a "snuff" flim? Southern Cross
Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Yes it is.An intriguing attempt to update both the Phantom of the Opera & the Portrait of Dorian Gray for the 1970s. Incidentally, the last thing I saw was a DVD of Baron Blood by the late, great director Mario Bava. Not one of his better works, but even minor Bava is miles better than most modern horror movies.
