Sociotard
Re: Order of the Stick Something just struck me from #702: In twenty years you will tell your great-grandchildren that you were here to see the first flicker of the flames that would change the world Criminey! Great grandkids in 20 years? How short is a goblin lifecycle? Or was he talking to Goblins that were already old, which I didn't see in any of the panels? Rapier
Re: Order of the Stick IIRC goblins had a rather short lifespan. I want to say 30 - 40 years.

Captain Obvious
Re: Order of the Stick Nasty, brutish, and short describes more than the physical characteristics of the typical goblinoid. Actually, though, most modern RPG sources agree that goblins breed like bunnies, because most modern RPGs have players slaying them by the dozen at medium power levels, and by the hundred at high power levels. Michael Hopcroft
Re: Order of the Stick Hence the joke of goblin mothers not bothering to give real names to most of their children, as they exist to be cannon fodder for adventurers. Even without an eye, Redcloak is that most dangerous of creatures, a goblin with a brain. Although why he's going back to Xyklon as opposed to being a king in all but name is a mystery to me. I guess that's so he can once again cross the path of the Order.

SCUBA Hero
Re: Order of the Stick Exactly. If Redcloak betrays Xykon, Xykon wouldn't mind killing (probably in a most unpleasant, lingering measure [look at what they he did to O'Chul]) Redcloak. Or, if he didn't have the time, just killing him. Or worse. Redcloak *can't* escape...
OddHat
Re: Order of the Stick Even worse. As Redcloak says to his followers, the only reason Xykon is leaving the Goblins with Azure City is that it's somewhat more entertaining and less effort than killing them all (or as many as he can before he gets bored, which is probably a considerable number). If Redcloak betrayed Xykon and failed to actually destroy the lich, he can't be sure that Xykon would stop at just killing him.
Jhamin
Re: Order of the Stick Although why he's going back to Xyklon as opposed to being a king in all but name is a mystery to me. I guess that's so he can once again cross the path of the Order. They aren't available as part of the archives, but Rich created two full books full of strips that go into the background of all the major characters. "On The Origin of PCs" goes into the Order's lives and "Start of Darkness" tells the story of Redcloak and Xyklon. I really recommend them both. Start of Darkness goes a lot into the family lives of Goblins and makes it explicit that in the world of the strip, all goblinoids were created by the gods for the express purpose of providing appropriate challenges for low level PCs. "The Dark One" RedCloak worships is actually a former Goblin Warlord who ascended to Godhood on a platform of "worship me and I will make us the equal of the PC races". The RedCloak worn by, well RedCloak is an artifact that stops it's wearer from aging and is worn by the high Priest of the Dark One so he can live long enough to see the Dark One's plan through to completion. Funny bit of Back-story: in the Start of Darkness a major part of RedCloaks's arc is his relationship with his eyepatch-sporting brother and the widening rift between them. His brother thought the sacrifices RedCloak was making personally in the name of "the plan" were not justified. Needless to say, readers of "Start of Darkness" can't help but draw parallels now that RedCloak is sporting the eye patch. Oh, and Xyklon? He was never a good guy. In his living youth he was just lower level. The actions he manipulates RedCloak into by the end of the story firmly establish who is in charge in their relationship. It has nothing to do with power and all about what each of them is willing to do in the name of power. It also firmly establishes that the lines RedCloak crossed that day to side with Xyklon will prevent him from ever making a serious attempt at destroying Xyklon. He has to believe it was necessary in order to live with himself.

Sociotard
Re: Order of the Stick Are there others? I was under the impression that O-Chul was only alive because it was more fun to see him almost die over and over. Unless they had some way of keeping the lich amused or had something to offer Redcloak, I'm not sure there'd be any Azure City citizens left to be prisoners.
