Holger Carlsen. :D Who has some interesting origins that would require a lot of spoiler work, but that would ruin the book for others to read, since it appears to be not to known nowadays.

~Rex

Pity... it's a good read and is the highly obvious origin of the AD&D troll, right down to the greenish appearance, regeneration, and taking extra damage from fire.

It's also one of the key books used for the origin of the Paladin as a class as well. It certainly, presents the Heroic mien and will exceptionally well, and, there is the Troll. It's a very fun book, but then so is a Lot of Poul Anderson's fantasy, Like "The Broken Sword" for another suggestion. :D

That's my favourite of all his books!

Re: Character: Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter (SPOILERS!!!)

Uhm... which one is?

The Broken Sword. It's a heavily Norse inspired fantasy about a human child brought up by Elves amid their war with the trolls. Much darker than 3 hearts and 3 lions and it's both more original and much truer in feel to the source material than much of his other norse-inspired writing. Like Rex, it was a major inspiration to me and the feel of it shaped parts of my game. I strongly recommend it. Interestingly though, years ago I read an interview with Poul Anderson where he said he really didn't like the book now and that if he had written it when older, he would have changed it dramatically. I'm glad he didn't!

cheers, Mark

Description: Paksenarrion’s horse (he never acquires a name during the corse of Oath of Gold) just appeared one day out in a field while Paksenarrion was out riding. It doesn’t take Paks long to realize her horse isn’t any mere warhorse, but a true paladin’s mount. He’s far smarter than any regular horse, he never needs brushing, always appears fresh, and has the slightly disturbing tendency to appear fully saddled and equipped when ever Paks is getting ready to go somewhere -- even if he was in his stall in the stable five minutes ago.

(Paksenarrion's Horse created by Elizabeth Moon, character sheet created by Michael Surbrook)
