Translated: There's a reason you need a rudder on one end. Well, my understanding is that the peculiar aerodynamic design of the aircraft all but eliminates the "sonic boom" that previous SSTs were known for, making it possible for overland flights without noise issues. Old Man
Re: "Neat" Pictures Neat' date=' but, wouldn't the guy fall forward?[/quote'] It's my understanding that a standing person who passes out will fall backward, not forward. Of course, I think my source for this is an Encyclopedia Brown book, so YMMV. Also, you'd think there might be some unpredictable twitching involved after a successful called shot to the brainpan. Captain Obvious
Re: "Neat" Pictures People tend to fall forward when they lose consciousness, but a bullet pushing backward at head level would probably alter that tendency, I would think. Captain Obvious
Re: "Neat" Pictures What did Mythbusters say? Because I've been active duty for 15 years, and I've seen a lot of people pass out in a lot of ceremonies that shouldn't be happening on such a hot day, and they all fell forward. Ian Mackinder
Re: "Neat" Pictures What did Mythbusters say? Because I've been active duty for 15 years' date=' and I've seen a lot of people pass out in a lot of ceremonies that shouldn't be happening on such a hot day, and they all fell forward.[/quote'] I think dmjalund is referring to the Mythbusters coverage of bullet impacts. Specifically, the standard Hollywood thing where a bullet impact will typically lift a person right off their feet and throw them at least a couple of yards. As I recall, the Mythbusters found that simply doesn't happen in reality. A bullet "might" have some influence on which way a person falls, but not much. Captain Obvious
Re: "Neat" Pictures Yeah, bullets don't throw people...that's Hollywood BS. I'm just talking about tipping someone backwards rather than the natural tendency to fall forwards. That probably wouldn't require a whole lot of energy transfer to pull it off. The next time I have access to a corpse, or at least someone so unconscious that picking them up and dropping them won't wake them up, I'll experiment and post my results here. ghost-angel
Re: "Neat" Pictures People crumple almost strait down when they suddenly lose consciousness. But people also bend forward at the waist. Combine the two and you have a tendency to face-plant naturally as you both go down and bend, altering your center of gravity 'forward' of your torso. If there's any point where the 'passing out' involves a few moments of waver, where the person is semi-conscious, they might fall in any given direction, face planting is still pretty common.
