Thomas Watson might not have known about the pantents of the transistor by Julius Edgar Lilienfeld in 1925 and Oskar Heil in 1934. But Texas Instruments didn't produce a transistor until 1954, and the Intergrated Circuit wasn't lab-demonstrated until 1958. Large-Scale Integration (LSI) in an IC was what enabled the creation of the first microprocessors in 1971 (like Intel's 4004).

 

Almost three decades, and two critical (and likely unforseen) breakthroughs, are what turned his words false. Not to mention that his words could easily have been referencing his "here and now" and not a prediction for all time.

 

But it is a neat article, Bazza. :)
