Michael Hopcroft
rightnow "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" by Oasis is playing. God in Heaven, what a terrible album it is. Today the brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher are remembered mainly for their operatic-intensity drunken brawls. But in 1995 they were the darlings of the music business. Some even called Noel Gallagher the next John Lennon. What he actually was, of course, was Lennon minus imagination and genius. Their backers must have hoped they would "save" rock from the encroachments of other genres and other, rougher styles. (What;s the Story) Morning Glory" is essentially a love letter penned by Noel to himself and his own cleverness -- but he wasn't nearly as clever as he thought he was. Although he could come up with a few catchy tunes, his lyrics were, for the most part, complete nonsense. To give you an idea, here's "Champagne Supernova" -- a seven-and-a-half minute exercise in self-indulgence with a lyrical conceit that not even LSD can render explicable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3C7DECI0jU Although the album did sell a lot of copies, the feud was the only thing that would later keep Oasis in the news, It wasn't until 2009 that Oasis finally broke up for good and Noel Gallagher embarked on an unnoticed solo career. Michael Hopcroft
The first single from a new album inspired by Don Rosa's graphic novel The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. The video features Rosa drawing, and the sheer joy on his face as he works is utterly infectious. Ternaugh
