Crew studies the science of deep space dining

Out of about 700 applicants, six of these nine finalists will spend four months isolated in a space simulation, part of a NASA research program on interplanetary eating. But first, they have to learn space camp survival, including how to cook.

That's where the researchers at Cornell University come in.

"We are learning to cook different foods based on the ingredients that we will have available at the habitat," said Yajaira Sierra, a candidate and materials scientist.

The candidates are working with a variety of commercially available foods with very long shelf lives. The challenge is to not only make them edible, but appetizing.

Big news here is NASA is getting serious about the "six people share an efficiency apartment they aren't allowed to leave" situation that I always thought would be the biggest problem on a crewed Mars mission. The Russians have been working on it for some time.

Agreed. Being able to live together without killing each other is something space colonists will have to learn.

No, no, no. That's not an alien spaceship. That's Atlantis.

Re: More space news!

Why does everyone say that?

Because we're trying to think of ways to fund space exploration. I mean, it does raise the possibility that the first beings to reach Mars will be Snooki and a Kardashian. But that's a small price to pay. Right?

Dangit, scooped! :|

Oh well. :)

And the LHC has been going for only a bit over two years so far.

At 1200 BST on Tuesday 30 March 2010 the LHC successfully smashed two proton particle beams travelling with 3.5 TeV (trillion electron volts) of energy' date=' resulting in a 7 TeV event.[/quote']
