McCoy
Re: More space news! ... To be the frist physician to perform an appendectomy In Space! Through the Apollo program, NOT having had an appendectomy was a DQ for astronaut training. Seemed a weird place to draw the line to me. Anyone know if that's changed? Cancer
Re: More space news! I'm almost certain it has. I was told by someone who would know that with the mission specialist (non-pilot) Shuttle astronauts all that was needed was being able to pass a Class II aeronautics physical. SteveZilla
Re: More space news! Does it simulate the onset of blindness in astronauts exposed to long term microgravity? The only thing it is testing (afaik) is the time factor, i.e., the being in isolation for such an extended period.

Not sure, but I saw the Chinese flag flying from City Hall the other day. I wondered if we'd been taken over.

Cancer
Re: More space news! Are these measurements at any particular wavelength? Used to be that AAVSO was nearly all people (who had had lots of practice) using their eyeball with "small" telescopes. Nowadays there are enough CCD cameras on telescopes that I think most of it is B or V band. Both are visible window, one "blue" (I think centered about 450 nm) and one "visual" (centered about 550 nm), each roughly 100 nm wide FWHM. These are intended to be on the old broadband Johnson photometric system, I think, though how well it syncs up with that isn't clear. CCDs have a rather different response function than photocathodes.
