Re: Musings on Random Musings

Good catch Log. And the Taco Bell/Long John Silver's/Pizza Hut/KFC company that was once called Tricon is now called Yum's, as I discovered on checking out more.

When Pepsi split off Tricon, it (Tricon) accounted for about $10 billion in annual revenues while Frito-Lay and Pepsi, combined, accounted for about $20 billion for Pepsi-co.

I read several years ago that Pepsi makes more money with Frito-Lay than with hits beverage brand.

Isn't that what's called "horizontal marketing"?

Speaking of which, this is pretty interesting, re KFC's legendary secret formula:

Personally, I always thought they had a great formula for their traditional chicken. Interesting how they keep it secret, still.

One company blends a formulation that represents only part of the recipe. Another spice company blends the remainder. A computer processing system is used to safeguard and standardize the blending of the products' date=' but neither company has the complete recipe.[/quote']

What happens if one employee or excecutive works for both companies (not at the same time of course)?

Re: Musings on Random Musings

Maybe, it's not quite what we use the term for where I work but it's probably a niche usage there.

Or if you're making a joke I'm missing it...

Well, basically it's where a company makes more money merchandizing spinoff material than with the product brand it started with. In Pepsi's case, it's necessary because while Pepsi still outsells every other cola, it doesn't outsell Coke.

Okay, got it. For us, horizontal refers to cross-category, a product that has instantiations/versions that might be in running and basketball as well as, potentially (but less likely), crossing demographics. Thanks.

Re: Musings on Random Musings

BTW, as a side comment, when looking through KFC stuff earlier, I came across an urban legend I had never heard. Apparently when the name change came about (to KFC) some weird rumor spread that they had to stop referring to their product as "chicken" because the animals being used were so mutated they no longer qualified under US definitions as such! Who would believe that? Well, I'm sure some people did.

Who, you ask? The same people that believe that McDonald's serves only ground up earthworm meat.

It may not be prime beef, but come on!
