Bazza
Re: Musings on Random Musings Not so. The question you posed and I was answering was... Depends on whether you cling to the Julian calendar or not. Or go for one of the other major calendars still in use. The principal one of those is the Islamic calendar' date=' of course.[/quote'] and the other would be Hebrew/Jewish. ...major calendar's in use, and suggested Hebrew/Jewish as one of those "other major calendars still in use". It seems that the answer you posted was what type of calendar the Jewish/Hebrew calendar is. Unless your reply has something I'm missing. The Hebrew calendar is what is called a "lunisolar" calendar. The months are tied to the Moon, but the years are not. Extra months (and days) are inserted into the calendar according to a regular prescription to keep the High Holy Days (that is, the New Year) occurring at about the same time with respect to the seasons (that is, the tropical year). The Islamic calendar is strictly lunar. There are a fixed number of months to a year, and the months are set by the phases of the Moon. So the beginning of the calendar year drifts 10 or 11 days per year with respect to the tropical year. Q: are these two calendars, still in use? if so then your "other major calendars" seems to be fulfilled.
James Gillen
Re: Musings on Random Musings And then of course there's the Chinese calendar, which depending on source is in year 4710, as opposed to the Hebrew Calendar, which is in year 5772. Which raises the question of how the Jews survived over 1000 years without Chinese food. JG
