L. Marcus
Pages and squires -- in the end we have knights!
Cancer
The rooks will still rule, though. OTOH, it raises an interesting question ... can three knights and a king force checkmate? Two knights and king cannot.
L. Marcus
I have no interest in chess. Haven't played it in over twenty years!
Cancer
I was once almost good at it, but I haven't played it much over the last 30 years or so.
BlueCloud2k2
My skill level depends upon the skill level of those I play against. I play better against better players. Against people who have no business playing chess for some silly reason I play terribly. Maybe the saying: "The World's best swordsman does not fear the next best, but the idiot who doesn't know what he's doing." also applies to chess? Cancer
When I was most into the game, I played a couple of blindfold games (one at a time!). If you can do it at all, it greatly improves your game; I have recommended it to several people of my kids' generation as a way to become a stronger player quickly. Cancer
It's a lot more fun than explaining to a student why he got a 16 out of 100 on an exam without being explicitly insulting while suggesting that he actually come to class and read the textbook for a change, which is something I did a few minutes ago. BlueCloud2k2
Gee, people actually expect to get good grades without cracking a textbook? What's happening to our public education? Oh yeah, they are removing the textbooks from the classrooms (at least where I live they are).
Cancer
Well, strictly speaking, it's a private institution rather than public education, and I know nothing about where his earlier education took place. But (and he's not unique in this) there is a certain casualness in his approach that suggests it had not occurred to him that one might actually have to work in this 100-level college class. Cancer
If only knowledge was acquired by osmosis. With things as large as humans, osmosis is a slow, inefficient process. It does work, but for the task at hand not very well. I also wonder how many of the students in the class know what "formal logic fallacy" means. L. Marcus
I think logic was part of the curriculum of the philosophy course in high school. Never took that, so I'm not sure.

Cancer
There used to be a required philosophy part of the core here, but that may no longer be the case. I'll have to check.
