Science has come a long way out of philosophy's shadow, some would say "back then" (I'm thinking of Ancient Greece) that science was an equal to philosophy, however science was included in philosophy, ie scientists were labeled philosophers. (They may have done other good stuff; I'm just familiar with the math and the astronomy.)
