Cancer
Re: The Last Word Well, the math is interesting . That you're explicitly working with numbers of deaths takes some of the out of it.
L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word Apparently, there are programs to handle the actual statistics.
Cancer
Re: The Last Word Oh yes, there are. Part of our problem was that the statistics we wanted were poor. As in, not enough cases to define the behavior of the disease well enough for us to use it.
L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word This study had over 18,000 participants. That's pretty significant.

Cancer
Re: The Last Word Yeah, though if you get down to specific subgroups (selection by age range, certain types of disease, etc) you can get down to sets of individuals too small to define a survival curve (or even incidence rate) adequately. That was my problem. Especially since most of the things you naively think to do about it have really nasty, insidious effects when you start doing math with them. I have complained before about the lack of available schemes to interpolate in multiple dimensions, applying monotonicity constraints in all of those dimensions, and requiring the resulting function to be continuous and differentiable everywhere. Sigh.

My point being that if at least one definition applies then the word is being used correctly.
