Cancer
Re: The Last Word I am convinced that an important function of our tax code is to make lots of confusing rules which no one but a professional can figure out, and only the rich can hire those professionals. Simplifying the tax code would be very bad for accountants.

Cancer
Re: The Last Word We paid an accountant to do our taxes while we were living in Pullman and renting out the house in Seattle ... that raised the complexity to new levels. But after moving back and selling the Pullman house, the tax forms drifted back into dilettante-level arcane formulae, and at that point we decided we couldn't spare the $300 and tough it out with large native INT and the 8- familiarity each of us has. It takes extra time, but ...

Cancer
Re: The Last Word No, just convinced of the utter hopelessness in the present world's political trends. Abject chattel serfdom seems inevitable for 80+% of the population of the US. China is going to transcend the corruption level of the worst of late 19th Century Trust capitalism, and turn all of East Asia into a knee-deep-in-industrial-pollution death pit after going on a series of wars of aggression to seize the raw materials of Siberia (first) and the rest of their neighbors (second). And Orwell's darkest predictions in 1984 seem to be laughably short of the completeness of information and population control by the ruling oligarchy is going to reach.
