WA is particularly bad at it, IME. Except on interstates (and who needs signs there?), there are very few signs on highways here to indicate what road you're on. After you turn onto a road, you'll get one sign within a hundred yards of the intersection indicating what route you're on ... and then nothing. It may be half an hour's drive before you get another. I find myself extremely suspicious of directional signs (West/East/North/South). I just learn which side of the highway I need to get on. I do a lot of turning-around, here in Asheville. I find auditory input infuriatingly distracting while I'm decision-making while driving, and of course the unit "chooses" to talk a precisely those times. I put some signs up on my flickr site, but I really wish I had taken a picture of this one: It won't help your directional sense at all since it's on a North-South section of road...
