Cancer
There all the barrel-hoops are knit, There all the serpent-tails are bit, There all the gyres converge in one, There all the planets drop in the Sun. -- William Butler Yeats, Supernatural Songs IV, "There"

Bazza
Progress is just another process. Unless one is talking about the spacecraft. No not theta sense of progress, this sense: Progress (history), the idea that the world can become increasingly better in terms of science, technology, modernization, liberty, democracy, quality of life, etc.
Cancer
Avarice is the counter to progress in that sense. When the ruling classes decide that they should possess all the wealth, and everyone else should suffer short, undignified, brutish, and miserable lives, while the rich folk gloat over them. A very potent force in politics the last third of a century or so.

Cancer
Well, they're the ones in charge of dictating front-page content these days. Profit, sensation, and the glorification of hereditarily-held media monopolies.

Cancer
Oh yes. The Murdock conglomerate is one, but there are smaller ones as well. I have given up on Seattle's remaining daily newspaper because of it.

A very potent force in politics the last third of a century or so. While i can see your perspective, i don't share it. Progress has been pushed by the greedy to help achieve their ambitions, making more money, and pushing through their political, social and cultural agendas. But do agree that greed has been a very potent force in politics since the 80s to today. That is just obvious if you look at it.
