Pariah
...which is way the heck on the other side of the continent from where you are. Correct? (Okay, I had to Google it. I'm not up on my Aussie geography. But still.)

Cancer
At least he's not in Alice Springs, where *every* side is the far side of the continent. Bazza and Pariah
Bazza
At least he's not in Alice Springs, where *every* side is the far side of the continent. The definition of "middle of nowhere".
Pariah
Kinda like Arco, Idaho, or Winnamucca, Nevada. Or Alamosa, Colorado. It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from there.
Pariah
...and I just discovered that someone I know is currently living in Winnemucca. Awkward.
L. Marcus
I've been to Vuöni, that my father described as "the village God forgot!"

Cancer
In the early days of Mapquest, when you requested a map of Tampico, WA (where my folks lived), literally what you got was an otherwise empty box with a single dot in the middle. A case can be made that that was appropriate.
Bazza
I sort of like/dislike mapmakers putting in fake towns to catch plagiarisers.
Cancer
Well, Tampico WA is a real place; it's just in the hinterlands and very little more than fork in the road with a sometimes-open-sometimes-not store, a fire station, and a church. L. Marcus
Can't have a place without a church!
Pariah
I lived in a little town in West Virginia that had a church and a post office and a grocery store, but no gas station. If you ran out of gas in that town, you had to find a way to the next town 2 miles down the road in order to get gas. Don't ask me how I know this. L. Marcus
So, how do you know this?
Cancer
The difference between West Virginia and states in western half of the US is that instead of 2 miles the crucial dimension there is upwards of 20, and quite possibly upwards of 50. Pariah
We drove about 2,000 miles about a week and a half ago, and regularly saw signs that said things like, "Next services: 57 miles".
L. Marcus
That close?
Cancer
Of course, Pariah was driving in states that believe in informative signs. Here in Washington you'll never see such things. That would be helpful, and we can't have that. Pariah
L. Marcus
But isn't Washington basically socialist?

Pariah
Only in some densely populated urban pockets which are thoroughly hated by the residents of most of the area of the state.
