Ah, yeah -- do you have a recycling system? There's a small extra fee to our standard drinking containers (plastic and aluminium), that are repaid if recycled in machines that most supermarkets and convenience stores have ... Depends on the state. Where I used to live, pretty much mandatory to sort trash, etc... and refunds on containers. Utah, it seems frowned on. I was talking to a coworker about it and another coworker who grew up in the area goes "Why should you have to recycle, we have a landfill!" and then he went off into crazy territory about liberal government plots and how recycling is one of the ways how they track you. I think there's collection points where you can get paid for some things, but I'm sure about that. Elsewhere in WA things are different; the "frowned upon" feeling exists, like you say.
