AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Around here it isn't a Thunder storm unless the Thunder shakes the house. Yep. That's what I've gotten used to here in WNC.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word My sister had those in her bedroom closet when she was in Killeen. Sounds like a time when the "The floor is on fire!" game I used to play as a child might come in handy.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Yeah, that was my take on it, as well. Apparently, though, it was Army housing, and so the problem was quietly and efficiently taken care of.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Heh. Hadn't thought about that angle, but yeah, that's likely. Ah, to dream . . . Josh tells me he used to use all kinds of firecrackers on the African red anthill across from his grandparents' place in Eastport.
Cancer
Re: The Last Word Ants aren't a serious problem here, except for carpenter ants, which can eat your house. Yeah, it happens sometimes that they'll find their way in, but we don't have the Toxic Assault Hellspawn that are fire ants.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word When we first moved to Asheville, we had in infestation of the teeny weeny ants in our kitchen. It was very rainy that summer, though, and so coming indoors was the only sensible thing to do. I don't know what the nice man in the smock said to them (I know there were no chemicals involved), but they went away.
Cancer
Re: The Last Word We haven't had a problem with insects here, other than fleas on the inside-outside cats. The spiders get unnerving in late summer/early fall, but those, of course, aren't insects.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word When Josh and I moved into our current apartment, there were daddy long-legs in the bathtub. I insisted that we buy a hair trap to keep them from coming up the drain. There are few worse places to encounter a spider (even one so nonthreatening as a daddy long-legs) than when you're naked and periodically closing your eyes. lemming
Re: The Last Word There are some red ants here that hurt like hell, but at least I don't have a reaction like some people. But yes, fire ants are very bad.

Cancer
Re: The Last Word I am desperately hoping those don't make it up here in my lifetime, but they could. I mean, we have bass in many rivers, and snapping turtles in the Willamette River in Oregon, both of which we would much rather not have. AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word You don't have them in WA? That's weird. They're all the way up in Maine, and that's a much less forgiving climate.
