Cancer
Re: The Last Word rot13 in the descriptive sense, and rot13 in the prescriptive sense. You are NyvprGurBjy in rot13, I am Pnapre, L. Marcus is Y. Znephf. In the deep, forgotten past, rot13 was used in Usenet posts to protect joke punchlines, spoilers, and the like. I sometimes use it to generate NPC handles and placenames for games, making use of the A <--> N and E <--> R symmetries to ensure I get something with at least a couple of vowels, but will still be alien-looking enough to fit in a strange world. For example, I have used "Pergva Zbeba" as a board handle in some circumstances.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word NyvprGurBjy would be an awesome alt, if only I could figure out how to pronounce it. Niv-pur'-gur-buh-jee?
Cancer
Re: The Last Word Well, the point of rot13 (in the computer era) really never was encryption ... it was spoiler concealment.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Seems easier to pronounce with a short I. So I'm guessing this is a letter substitution, where you move it 13 letters down the alphabet?
Cancer
Re: The Last Word yep. just peep at the links I have above. Rotate it 13 places down the alphabet, like a cheesy adjustable decoder ring.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word That's a computer language? My friends and I made up that "code" when we were, like, 8.
Cancer
Re: The Last Word Well, Julius Caesar used something like it also in the first century BC. Back the flat-text-only era, it was convenient for spoiler protection in mail items, and that's abotu all.

Cancer
Re: The Last Word Confused isn't the same as inconvenienced. I think the entire underlying concept of "convenience" is either untranslatable into cat, or anathema.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word My cat's been inconvenienced all day. I've been bringing her to work to watch her, so she doesn't chew her stitches, and she's been QUITE upset about not being able to wander the grounds. She finally leapt over the barrier I put in front of my doorway, so I got my boss's permission to put her in his office, so he could close her in. She cried for something like an hour, then glared at me for the next two. How DARE I keep her from her Bast-given right to explore her territory? Cancer
Re: The Last Word The kittens have something of the same attitude. They've got big enough to get fixed. There's a backlog at the shelter since the adoption rate has dropped off lately.
