Cancer
Re: The Last Word Careful, you're talking to a martial arts instructor. Their whole reason for being is to make it pointlessly painful.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Ouch. My sympathies. The worst was this general back pain I had, back when I was working at Suncoast. I suspect it was a manifestation of stress, but my back ached something fierce all the time, and that job required lifting, bending, and standing all day on slab concrete (thinly disguised with some fuzz they called a carpet). Second to that was this ache in my wrist that I suspect was carpal tunnel, which I got from ringing at a register for 8 hours a day. It cleared up when I left that job. Bazza
Re: The Last Word Feh' date=' that's much more boring than I expected.[/quote'] Just what I expected a science teacher to say too Do you read New Scientist magazine? I'm sure there was an article within a month ago about that the nature of reality. IIRC it said basically that reality is the nature of maths, not geometry, or physics, but maths. do you recall this article? edit: the article is here. Unfortunately I'm not a member so can't read it. Are you?

Cancer
Re: The Last Word Heh, if you read Hofstadter's stuff, consciousness is the result of logical inconsistency. I haven't read his latest book yet, though, just a couple of reviews. I don't read New Scientist on a regular basis; it's one of those things skim through at irregular intervals. You didn't answer my question, do you have access to the New Scientist web site? (please) Looking through this years archives there are a articles there I'd like to read. You wouldn't deny an amuter philosopher and fan of David Bohm would you? I have Bohm's Wholeness & The Implicate Order on my bookshelf. I also know he wrote a book titled Thought As A System, and he and Karl Pribram proposed that the brain works in a holographic/holonomic manner. As you seem to be interested in consciousness you may find Bohm & Pribram's holonomic model appealing.
Bazza
Re: The Last Word Cancer has pro access to the good stuff! That's perilously close to "sh*t on rocks" for my taste. from what I gather, New Scientist is aimed at the general public science enthusiast, not the professional scientist. I've also read that many pro scientists do read it New Scientist as it gives them general information on disciplines they are specialists in. Cancer
Re: The Last Word Looks like the university has on-site search access, but the lame library interface doesn't seem to let me simply grab and read the newest issue. So I have to know titles, or other useful search criteria; I haven't found a convenient way to get to something as useful as a table of contents for an issue. I have to be on-site to check the other location's access; that won't happen for at least a couple of days.

I'd rather eat prime rib than at McDonald's, any day.[/quote'] Heh. Actually, I had a situation along these lines not long ago. A former SO asked me for advice about getting a backyard telescope, and I have oddly little useful advice to give there. I've spend a few hundred hours on 2-meter class telescopes, and that experience doesn't tell you much about what to look for in an 0.2-meter telescope. Once you've done the good drugs, there's no going back to the street-corner crap.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word A friend of mine owns a pretty good telescope, after years of pining after one. She got it for Christmas. It took her almost six months to get it aligned properly to actually see stuff. That she lives in upstate New York doesn't help, I'm sure.
