Some folks are more sensitive to things that are "not right" and therefore it may be frightening to them. When I was a young teen, that might have raised the hairs on the back of my neck. A pencil drawing of a very creepy face did that to me and set my juvenile imagination down some dark paths. These days? It made me smile because I like those sorts of things.
